Enugu PDP berates Bishop Chukwuma over comments on zoning

Enugu State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has berated the Anglican Bishop of Enugu, Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, for allegedly meddling in the politics of the state.
Bishop Chukwuma, who briefed newsmen in Enugu last week, had reportedly said the zoning of the governorship slot to Enugu North was undemocratic.
But the state Chairman of the PDP, Chief Vitta Aba, advised Bishop Chukwuma to either steer clear of politics or design a platform where he would field candidates of his choice to contest elections instead of criticising the ruling party’s policy in the state.
Chief Abba dismissed the cleric’s comments but said however that everybody was entitled to his or her opinion.
“In our party, we have our own procedures to ensure equity and fair play while making choices for elections.
“As far as the party is concerned, anyone who is talking about our zoning arrangement but is not a member of our party is making no point, it is an irrelevant comment.
“If the person has his own platform for fielding candidates, he should go ahead to do that and field in candidates from zones of his choice and leave us alone with our own arrangement. Just let us all meet at the polls,” he said.
In his reaction, the leader of the Nsukka Zonal Awareness Forum (NZAF), Chief James Ugwu, described Chukwuma’s comments as dangerous to the polity.
Ugwu said: “Bishop Chukwuma did not raise any objection of this nature when it was the turn of the other two zones. Why is he against Nsukka zone? Is he insinuating that Nsukka zone is made up of incompetent people? Or is it that he hates them? That would be a position unbecoming of his personality as a bishop.”
But reacting to the criticisms trailing his comments on zoning through a text message, Bishop Chukwuma stated: ‘’Nsukka people should be serious and not wait for Governor Sullivan Chime. Nsukka people do not contribute to me, in anything; so be careful.’’
