The management of Lagos State University (LASU) and the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday signed an agreement on the contentious issues that led to the May 20 industrial action.
A statement signed by the Press/Public Relations Officer of LASU, Mr. Kayode Sutton, said the signing of the agreement was arrived at after a meeting which ran into the late hours of Tuesday, July 8.
According to him, the two parties reached a truce on some issues, which led to the strike that partially grounded academic activities in the institution for over eight weeks.
In a reaction to the statement, Chairman, LASU chapter of ASUU, Dr. Adekunle Idris, who spoke to Daily Sun on phone, confirmed the agreement but said it was done with the Academic and Promotion Committee, saying this notwithstanding, the strike would not be called off in the next few hours as stated in the statement.
Sutton revealed that the university management team, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa and ASUU-LASU, led by Dr. Idris, after the deliberations, resolved to sheathe their swords for peace to reign in the institution in the interest of the students and the entire university community.
Idris said the union was waiting for the outcome of the governing council meeting held on Wednesday and yesterday.
“We are waiting for the outcome to summon a congress, which has the right to decide on the situation,’’ he said.
He explained that at the last congress it was resolved that whatever decision that was taken by the council, congress would deliberate and take action on it adding “we are not calling off the strike in the next few hours. Our decision to suspend the strike will be based on council’s decision.’’
