‘Nigerians’ll insist on implementation of confab’s recommendations’

A member of the just-concluded National Conference, Steve Aluko, has said the implementation of its recommendations would depend largely on Nigerians, whose interest they serve and not the National Assembly or the present government, which convened the meeting.
Aluko, who represented the civil society at the conference, told journalists in Jos that lack of political will could prevent the recommendations from being implemented because of issues like the immunity clause, special allocation to the office of the First Lady that was thrown out and the allocations to the National Assembly, which were touched by the conference.
He urged Nigerians to get familiar with the recommendations so that they could agitate for the implementation, pointing out that if the present administration failed to implement it, those coming after it would do so.
Aluko insisted that it was the popular wish of the delegates that the report should go to the public and after Nigerians had vetted and rejected whatever recommendations in the report, then it could go to the National Assembly.
“We know that when it goes to the National Assembly, they will surely water it down.
“The National Assembly itself realised that some of the issues they could not touch, like party and government interests, were dealt with at the confab.
“If Nigerians see it as their project, they can engage the National Assembly and at the end of the day, the interest of Nigerians would prevail,” he said.
