RIVERS PDP ON FIRE

Party holds congresses amid crisis
■Arsonists set secretariat ablaze
The crisis rocking the Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic (PDP) has taken a dangerous dimension, as some suspected arsonists yesterday, attempted to burn down the state secretariat , located at No, 23, Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
The incident occurred less than 24 hours after over 15 governorship aspirants , opposed to Ikwerre governor in 2015, organised what they called, “Power must change in Rivers rally” at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt.
However, the attempt by yet-to-be- identified arsonists was foiled by some security men attached to the PDP headquarters.
Saturday Sun gathered that the suspected arsonists stormed the secretariat at 5am, carrying a four-litre jerry can containing fuel, which they wanted to use to execute their operation. But two mobile policemen, who were inside the main hall on the ground floor of the building, were said to have been awakened by the fire, which had already started burning from the main entrance.
The suspects quickly escaped, while the security men raised the alarm, which attracted neighbours and passers-by who helped in putting off the fire. One of the security men, who claimed to be outside the building when the suspected arsonists arrived the area, said he tried to prevent them, but they still succeeded pouring fuel through the burglar -proof at the entrance before setting it on fire.
According to him, it was the assistance of some passers-by that helped to contain the fire.
Reacting to the incident, the State Chairman of the party, Chief Felix Obuah, said it was the handiwork of those he described as, desperate governorship aspirants, dissidents, expelled and suspended members of the party. Obuah said the party was concerned that the incident occurred, less than 24 hours, after the rally by the “dissident group.”
He said: “The Party expresses serious concern and suspicion on the manner and timing of the event which occurred just less than 24 hours after a group of dissidents comprising a handful of expelled and suspended members of the Party and mixed with agents and members of the All Progressives Congress, who sparsely congregated at the liberation stadium, Elekahia, during which they threatened violence on the PDP and its leaders, as some of them called for the postponement of the ward congresses of the party billed for tomorrow Saturday.”
Chief Obuah also accused the All Progressives Congress(APC) of masterminding the foiled arson.

Cynthia: Deceased was my long time lover –Alleged killer

The trial of alleged murderers of Cynthia Osokogwu witnessed a new twist yesterday before the Lagos State High Court sitting in Igbosere, as the first defendant in the case gave account of his own story.
The deceased was murdered at Cosmilla Hotel, Lake View Estate, Festac Town, in Lagos by her alleged Facebook friends.
Lagos State had charged Okwumo Nwabufo 34; Olisaeloka Ezike, 24; Orji Osita, 33 and Ezike Nonso, 25, to court two years ago for conspiracy and murder of Cynthia.
At the resumed hearing of the matter on Friday, the first defendant Okwumo Nwabufo opened his defence, he told the court that the deceased was his long time lover.
And they were already planning their wedding before the ugly incident happen.
Nwabufo who was led in evidence by his counsel, Chris Opara, revealed that contrary to the report that spread round that he met the deceased on Facebook, he said their affair started in 2011, when they met at Shoprite in Lekki.
According to him, he went for shopping at the venue mentioned, while the deceased was also doing the same thing when they met.
He said after introducing each other, they exchanged contact address.
The defendant who claimed to be a car dealer and also a part time undergraduate of University of Lagos, studying accounting, said he paid the deceased a visit at her base in Abuja and the deceased also visited him where he lodged at Satellite Suit Hotel located at Bwari area council of Abuja.
Nwabufo, said from that moment they became very close and he started assisting her as a close friend.
“The late Cynthia was my girl friend, we were very close and we are already planning to get married as lovers. She visited me often in Lagos. she has been to my house up to five times, I have been very helpful to her doing everything a boyfriend can do to his girlfriend like monetary support, moral support and advising her always.
“I promised that I would marry her and she accepted but told me it is still early that I should wait till Christmas when I will visit her parents in Delta State, everything about us was going well till the day I heard about her death, I was so devastated, I was crying, asking why, why, why should it be her, saying who must have done this, but the police didn’t give me chance to express my feelings when I was arrested and they made me look like a murderer”, he narrated.
Under cross examination by the Attorney General of Lagos state, Ade Ipaye, the defendant told the court that he did not meet the late Cynthia on facebook as he does not have a facebook account.
He said:” I can’t recall anything in the statement obtained by the police because the police told me to act the script”.

Tambuwal, APC drag FG to court

The Speaker of the House of Re p r e s e nt a tives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his new political platform, All Progressives Congress [APC], yesterday dragged the Federal Government and six others before the Abuja division of Federal High Court over attempt to declare his seat vacant and the withdrawal of his security aides.
In another development, a renowned constitutional lawyer, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, has filed a separate suit on behalf of Tambuwal for an order of court directing the Inspector General of Police to restore the security aides of the Speaker.
In the suit filed by his counsel, Jubrin Okutepa [SAN], Tambuwal is seeking the declaration of the court that the attempt to declare his seat vacant as a member and honourable Speaker is unlawful and unconstitutional.
The suit has the Peoples Democratic Party, its National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Inspector General of Police, Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] and the Attorney General of the Federation [AGF] as 1st to 7th defendants respectively.
He also asked the court to declare that he remains a member and the speaker of the House of Representatives until the expiration of his current term of office on June 5, 2015.
Tambuwal also wants the court to declare that withdrawal of his security details when he has not been removed from office as Speaker and member of the House of Representatives is illegal and unconstitutional.
Besides, the Speaker prayed for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from taking any steps to interfere or infringe on his rights and privileges as the Speaker of the House of Representatives and as a member of the House before the expiration of his term. He also wants the court to give an order of perpetual injunction restraining INEC from accepting any nomination of candidates or organising a bye – election for the purpose of replacing him.
Also, Tambuwal wants an order of mandatory injunction compelling the IGP and the AGF to restore his security details and all other rights, benefits and privileges appurtenant to members of and the office of the Honorable Speaker.
In a 40-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Tambuwal, he averred that on October 28, 2014, the PDP and its national chairman threatened to forcibly remove me from office as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, adding that the threat was made public as reported by some national dailies of October 29”.
He further averred that House of Representatives and the Deputy speaker on October 30 began to strategise on how to unlawfully remove me from office as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“That I know that on the 30th day of October, 2014, the IG at the behest of defendants withdrew my security details hereby exposing me to danger of bodily harm all in their bid to forcibly remove from office”, Tambuwal stated.
The plaintiff also averred that he has become apprehensive that the defendants will use unlawful means to make good their threats if the court does not intervene to stop them.
In a separate suit filed by Dr. Tunji Abayomi on behalf of Tambuwal, Abayomi prays for a temporary order of court directing the return of the security aides of the Speaker pending the determination of the suit.
Abayomi also prays the court for an order restraining the defendants from interfering with the rights and privileges whatsoever attached to the office of the Speaker pending the determination of the suit.
The two cases are yet to be assigned to a judge.

$9.3m arms cash was set-up – Oritsejafor

Why pastors, others are after my husband – CAN president’s wife
At last, Pastor Helen Oritsejafor, has opened up on the contentious $9.3m money-for-arm saga, saying it was a grand design to cow Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the outspoken founder of the Word of Life Bible Church and president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). She described the episode in which an aircraft owned by her spouse was caught in South Africa with the staggering amount on board as a ‘sinister joke.’ He dismissed it as the handiwork of enemies of progress determined to destabilize the country.
“Whoever such people are, they are not true Muslims or Christians. These are enemies of progress. These are people who are doing their very best to cause unnecessary discord between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria which is very sad. To use an innocent man to throw this sling is very sad”, she said, emotion welling up in her voice.
According to Mama Helen, who spoke in Warri ahead of the Church’s annual Jubilee Word Festival, “Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor is not the target; it’s every Christian in Nigeria. We are all the target. We are the ones they have targeted but, of course, they can’t get to everyone, so they have to look for the person who represents Christianity in Nigeria and that is what we are experiencing.”
She descended heavily on some men of God who have called on her husband to step down as CAN leader over the episode. She spoke further on this and more with BEIFOH OSEWELE. Excerpts:
Your husband has received a lot of bashing lately. How do you react?
For us southerners, we might not really appreciate what Papa Ayo Oritsejafor is doing and the role he is playing in Christianity in Nigeria because we are not directly affected by the activities of the terrorist group, Boko Haram. Christians in the North are the ones experiencing it, they are the ones losing fathers and mothers, children; being dislocated. They are the ones who see people’s throats being cut off like chickens, their houses being burnt by petrol bombs and their young ones both boys and girls being abducted on a daily basis. They value Papa so very much. They know that whatever he is going through today is because of them. They were actually the people who came to persuade him to run for CAN presidency. The first time they came, he used wisdom for them and said he would think about it. They came back again and kept coming because they know who he is. He is a good man. If there is anything I know my husband to be, is that he is a good man to a fault, and sometimes, I really feel for him. Unfortunately, the society of nowadays does not value a man like this, especially those of us in the South. He is much respected in the North.
How did you receive the news of his jet’s involvement in the $9.3m money-for-arms saga?
I was really surprised. I didn’t even know anything about it. I didn’t even know our plane was out of the country because we leased it out to a company in Abuja so that we will be able to utilise whatever comes out of the deal for the maintenance of the plane because it is quite expensive. So, we didn’t know. Even though we read and heard some comments some people made concerning it, unknown to us that our plane was actually involved. We were really surprised just like every people. In all honesty, by the time we got to know that it was Papa’s plane, we knew that the enemies were trying to play some prank. It is natural because he is a symbol of Christianity in Nigeria. If anyone wants to move against Christianity in Nigeria, it would be easier for the one to go after the symbol. The only thing is I wasn’t expecting people to get really dirty as they did.
So you were really shocked?
The whole episode appeared as if somebody was out for some sinister joke. It’s quite obvious. Take for instance, why was it that it was Papa’s plane that would be hired? How would it be that it would be his plane of all planes in Nigeria that they needed for that mission? It’s still very baffling. Number two, it became obvious that it was orchestrated and the whole essence of it is to see how they can give him a name God has not given to him, and all because he has been a very outspoken man. I know him too well, he is a very down-to-earth person, and he doesn’t know how to hide his feelings. He is a very quiet and reserved person. But then when there is a need for him to speak about anything, he would rather confront things the way they are rather than hide behind his fingers. That is not him. I know quite a number of people have been very uncomfortable with that especially with the Boko Haram situation.
Let’s be frank, who would not be affected? You are leading a body and gradually, there seems to be an elimination of this same group of people. You would be a wicked leader not to react. So, he made every effort. He noticed that our government wasn’t really forthcoming with a lot of things; we seem to try to politicise a lot of things in Nigeria which is quite troubling. He went out of his way to address the US Congress. It was quite obvious that terrorism was being financed not just from within but from outside as well, whether to destabilise or in a way, indirectly force on Nigeria a particular religion which is quite shameful. And he was not comfortable with that. If you would know, this was injustice. So, he is now paying the price for being an outspoken man, defending his people, defending Christianity in Nigeria, and do not want Nigerians having to hide their heads later on in life because whichever way we look at it, history will tell.
Why do you think that some people would politicise a purely security issue like that?
Well it’s natural. Number one, it is the perception. By the special grace of God, a man who has lived a life that is worthy of note, a man with an integrity that is without blemish, who will never compromise his stand whichever way it is; automatically, that man has added so much value to Christianity and of course, the umbrella of Christianity in Nigeria which is Christian Association of Nigeria. So, a personality like Papa Ayo is a threat to anyone who sees him as one because they believe he has a voice, he has a clout, coupled with the fact that the present president of Nigeria happens to be a Christian who is also from the South-South. So, they believe that this man is definitely going to support his brother, he would want him to come back being a Christian as well. Without having to say too much, if I could say this, it is quite shameful. At a point, I was going to actually call some of the wives of these so-called people who were going outside saying a lot of things about my husband, having to engage them as well and see how it looks like, telling them to come out and look at the issue, how would they feel, how would people condescend so low? A lot of things I read in the newspapers, sometimes they amuse me, sometimes I’m a little bit surprised. But when people begin to fabricate stories and they are doing everything in their power to hang a man, it’s quite surprising to me because I would think that what we should be talking about should be the dividends of democracy.
We don’t even have what they call political surgery. In developed countries, they have surgery where there’s what we call town house where it is expected at the local government level, state level and at whatever level, where people would be able to ask certain questions from the leadership, and challenge them on how they are piloting the affairs of the nation. With what I have seen, Nigeria is yet to get to that level and that is why we look for every necessary means to pull down people instead of fixing the issues on ground.
At least now, we all know that it is the National Security Adviser who hired that plane out, who happens to be a relation of the defence minister and who happens to be an in-law to the Sultan of Sokoto. I had a lot of respect for the Sultan of Sokoto. Before this issue of Boko Haram and so on, himself and my husband used to be very close. I could remember every now and then when he wanted to talk to my husband; he would often ask how is mama? If there were issues in the newspapers and all that, he would call in to find out things and so on and so forth. I so much cherished his relationship with my husband. But I’m a little bit surprised because no matter how it is, you know your friend. We must not allow bigotry to take away our innocence, our integrity, our conscience in the name of what we are trying to get. We must not allow that to happen. We must always remember posterity because one way or the other, posterity will always judge. And we must not throw caution to the wind because of whatever we are trying to achieve. We must also remember that Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor is a husband of a woman who has children as well, regardless of whatever we are trying to do. This is a man that I know, and some Nigerians also know that this is a man who is so loving and caring. If there’s anything this man can do to impact the lives of the downtrodden ones in the society, he would do. He’s done many. Many times over and over again, he goes out of his way to buy brand new cars, tricycles, grinding machines and so on to alleviate poverty in this country. He is a person who decided to start a micro finance bank, not necessarily to make money, but to see how he can help lift someone’s head up; in bridging gap between the poor and the rich.
He believes the poor in our midst deserves every right to be somebody in life. This is a man who has sent thousands of people to universities through his Indigent Scholarship Scheme that he has in place over the years. This is a man who actively participated in the peace initiative of Delta State that we are enjoying today. As a matter of fact, but for a man such as this, I do not think that Delta State would have been what it is today. There was nothing he didn’t do. He went out of his way to the creeks to speak to the militants, confronted situations headlong just to make sure he brings about peace.
What some people don’t know is that we love the Muslims. We do not have anything against Muslims. A lot of people are sending wrong signals to a lot of people, particularly Muslims, thinking that Pastor Ayo is an enemy of Muslims. It is totally untrue. There is no iota of truth in it. He has a lot of them as friends. Papa Ayo’s relationship with Sultan of Sokoto is still strong as ever. When Islamic fundamentalists were killing his Christian brothers and sisters in the North, he was forced to urge their leaders to speak against the killings, let us find solution to this, you have a right to practice your religion, I have equal right as well to do same and we must not be at each other’s throats; and somebody being at the receiving end and having to keep quiet, I must speak out because I am the leader. That’s who we are talking about here.
When the Niger Delta crisis was so heavy, a lot of Warri were closed down. They took off when the gunshots and so on were such a very messy situation. But he stood his ground. We have all kinds of tribes in Word of Life Bible Church today; there are people from the North, people from all parts of Delta State even at the time of the crisis. During the crisis, the church was functioning normally because he has always been a detribalised man. He is man that deals with people based on who they are, not according to tribe or religion. He engages people based on who they are. He went out of his way to spend tens of millions of naira on internally displaced Ijaws at Ogbe Ijoh, shipping bags of rice, bags of clothes and all sorts of things just to bring succour.
And naturally, many Itsekiris grumbled saying he did not extend the same gesture to them and he asked them if the Ijaws were not our people too? Whatever is happening, peace will definitely reign, we must not go back at each other. It was later he had to balance the whole thing so that they won’t think he’s one-sided.
When you look at all these, when you look at a man who can do anything just to make sure that another man is comfortable, why should any man, all because of his disposition towards his people, go after him in this manner? It’s amazing. What that goes to tell you is that they have looked for everything; we have heard of one or two people caught in some unholy alliance and so on, thank God my husband was not involved. They have done everything they could do to try and pull him down. What they finally did was to use a gift that was given to him; he didn’t use his money to buy it.
Some people said President Jonathan bought it for him.
I wish he did. I have the list of the names of people who masterminded this thing on our record. Hundreds and thousands of people, church folks who said this man served us with every vigour in him, we could see in him a great man and he’s not getting younger anymore. He is ever on the road constantly doing everything he can for the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us try as much as possible to elongate his life by blessing him with this gift. He didn’t buy it or put down money to say this is what he wants. He didn’t even know anything about it. I was aware of it. What I would have loved for them to tell me is to show me the receipt of the plane that was bought by President Jonathan and the person who said he bought the plane. I have heard all sorts of lies that maybe somebody did it on behalf of somebody. There’s no human being that can stand up to say I bought this plane. It’s a complete lie from the pit of hell. Because of his person, realising the fact that what should he do with this plane knowing the amount of money that it’s going to cost to maintain it; if he was using church money to maintain it, they would have cried out to say he is using church money. You can see how foolish people can be. If President Jonathan bought him a plane, can’t the same President Jonathan maintain the plane? Why must it be hired out so as to sustain the maintenance of the same plane if indeed it was the president that bought this plane? They politicise a lot of things. It’s really annoying.
Is Pastor Ayo really that close to President Jonathan as his accusers allege?
I would love it if people can help me define that word ‘close’. Yes there’s a relationship that has to do with being in his position as the President of CAN and President Jonathan as the President of Nigeria. Automatically, whether he likes it or not, there will be some level of interaction and that is what Nigerians are calling closeness. Maybe they should tell us how President Jonathan gave him one naira to buy a plane.
I don’t really think that Pastor Ayo is closer to the president than the Sultan of Sokoto, the co-chair of NIREC. This is not to say that Papa hates Jonathan, no he does not. He is a Christian and so as a Christian father to the nation, he tries his best to provide a guard. He speaks out whenever necessary. He goes in to offer his own advice or suggestion as the case maybe whenever he is asked to. When he wants to see the president, he makes request just like everyone else. And mostly, it is to discuss the issue of the nation. Many times, he goes with his CAN executive council members to sit down with the president and confront him on certain issues all to see how the nation can be well piloted. What I have noticed is that whichever way you see it, if I say this man is not close to the president, they will say it’s because of what happened, if I say he’s close, they will say that is what we are talking about. I don’t even care what people might say concerning that because you can never please human beings. What I am saying is that please before you start giving this man a bad name, find out the true position of things. Do not go out there forgetting that he is a husband to a woman and he is a father as well. Besides, he is a man who has sacrificed himself. I think Nigerians even have him more than I do.
He is a very passionate person. When he believes in something, he’s driven by it. He goes all out to see how he can really push across whatever he is trying to bring in. That’s who he is. When he got the leadership, when he was elected to lead Christians in Nigeria, he made up his mind that he was going to do everything and anything possible to propagate what he has been given. And he sees it as an assignment. Many times, people see leadership just to bear a name and enjoy it. I think if this man had wanted to enjoy the leadership as it were, maybe by now his relationship with the Sultan of Sokoto would be waxing stronger. And maybe he would have been enjoying more from the government as well. But he has decided to sacrifice all that just like Moses. Moses sacrificed and said he was not going to allow the booty in Pharaoh’s house to override his judgment and so he shut himself out completely from the judgment at the palace and made himself a sacrifice for the liberty and freedom of the Israelites. That is what we are seeing now with our father as well. He has truly given himself out to the nation and, then of course, to the people who we call his constituents.
How did he receive the news of the plane saga?
He didn’t also know. When everything happened, according to what we heard, the plane was released immediately and it came back to Nigeria. They didn’t even bother to contact us to tell us what happened. No one said anything. It was when someone called him and asked ‘where is your plane.’ And he said he didn’t know but he would find out from his wife. I have been the one managing it. When everything happened, they put it on him, but I have actually been the one running it. So he called me and asked where the plane was, I said I didn’t know promising to call him back.
The person who called him told him the plane was impounded in South Africa. So the gentleman said something happened. It was at that point he said one John came to hire the plane to South Africa. That was what happened. The next they heard was they discovered this and that. However, since they knew that the plane and the crew members had nothing to do with the transaction, they let the plane go which is the normal practice. The only thing they do is that once that occurs, the next thing they do is to search whoever that is involved, pick the person and that’s it. No one is now going to start putting it on the plane or the owners or even the crew. The next thing he said was, ‘Oh my God’. He said these people are after something. I actually thought it was a joke because I wasn’t expecting anyone to condescend to that base level. I expect someone to be able to see between the lines. Please let us not belittle our government. Are you telling me that a whole Federal Government of Nigeria would need a pastor to help him move money to a location to buy arms? That is an insult on this nation. For anyone to even phantom it shows how small minded we are really, and that we don’t look at things holistically. It just does not make any sense at all other than the fact that certain people just said since it is his plane, let us just see how we can rope him with it so that we can malign him at the end of the day since we have been unable to hook him to anything.
We were also told that the same people leaked the transaction to the media…
They did. They leaked it. When we now did our own investigation, we discovered that by the time the plane touched ground in South Africa, the picture was already taken. And some people were already having a meeting in London, and coming up with all sorts of stories and so on and so forth about him even before everything finally blew open. So it was all orchestrated right from Nigeria. Whoever such people are, they are not true Muslims or Christians. These are enemies of progress. These are people who are doing their very best to cause unnecessary discord between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria which is very sad. To use an innocent man to throw this sling is very sad.
Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor is not the target; it’s every Christian in Nigeria. We are all the target. We are the ones they have targeted but, of course, they can’t get to everyone so they have to look for the person who represents Christianity in Nigeria and that is what we are experiencing.
It’s sad to see Christian leaders calling for the resignation of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor and so on when some of them don’t even know the details of what happened. It’s manipulation. And some of them too have betrayed themselves. We also know the lives they live. I don’t even see some of those people as Christian leaders. I want to use this opportunity to appreciate our brethren at Catholic, our brethren at Baptist and all of the five blocks of Christian Association of Nigeria who stood their grounds knowing who they have as their leader and, of course, standing to confront anything negative concerning him. When I read the communiqué after a meeting they had in Abuja, they said this jet wasn’t bought by President Jonathan, but if anyone has evidence to this effect that it was bought by President Jonathan, make it public. Number two, they also said that this particular plane was leased out before now. If anyone has an evidence to show that it was not, make it public. I’m still waiting. I haven’t seen anyone to do that. I think it is at that time they will know that my own is more than my husband. I have just been holding myself because of him. Otherwise, I would have loved to scream and shout and show up on television and call out to Nigerians to say that they should not kill my husband. The only thing this man has done is to sacrifice himself for you. So if you do not appreciate him, then what is the need for him making these sacrifices, putting his 42 years in ministry on the line just because of you and I? I think he is a man who is worthy of commendation, who is worthy to be praised amongst men. A lot of people chicken out because they want to appear in the good books of everybody. No one really wants to come out. Everyone tries to shy away from anything that has to do with things like Boko Haram or anything. He is the only one by the special grace of God, and no wonder God decided to put him in this position for such a time like this. If we had had a weakling there, I don’t know what would have happened to this country by now. It would have been a different ball game entirely.

More troubles for Abia tertiary institutions

Rector, provost sacked
■ Lecturers begin strike
Barely one month after Saturday Sun published a report indicating that all was not well with tertiary institutions in Abia State, including Abia Polytechnic, Aba, Abia State University (ABSU), Abia State College of Technical Education, Arochukwu (ASCETA) and College of Health Sciences and Management Technology, Aba, the hen has come home to roost.
Few weeks after the report published on September 20, with the headline: Lecturers in Abia eat bread of sorrow…Owed salaries for months, tertiary institutions crumbling, there appears to be more troubles for the schools with the sack of some of their heads and their lecturers now on indefinite strike.
Summarising the precarious state of affairs in an interview with Saturday Sun in his office recently, Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Abia Polytechnic chapter, Mr Precious Nwakodo, said: “All is not well in Abia State Polytechnic, Aba. If you are owing me salary arrears, I can’t say all is well. Here, we have issue of salary arrears. As at September last year, we had salary arrears of eight months. As at today, it’s about four months’ arrears. The last salary we got was for April/May.”
The report further said that the institution, which is located in the heart of Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State, “contends with the ruins that define the city. Coming into Abia Poly through the second gate on Aba – Owerri road, you quickly notice that all is not well with the institution. To start with, a heap of garbage welcomes you. Blocking part of the road, the decomposing waste sting you like a bee and you are forced to close your nose and quicken your step while passing the place.
“The overflowing garbage bin is a permanent feature there. ‘They only come to evacuate the garbage when it starts overflowing. And because they do not come regularly, the garbage bin is always overflowing, making it a permanent feature sort of,’ a teacher, who craved anonymity, told the reporter.
“And when you come into the school, you will also see another overflowing garbage bin by the second gate, which is the exit gate. Indeed, waste management could be said to be an issue in the school. For instance, on the day the reporter went to interview the ASUP chairman, wastes littered the front of the ICT building where his office is located.”
Agatha, a student, captured the situation thus: ‘During the rainy season, the students hardly put on shoes to school because your shoes will not be the same again. At a time like this, we wear sandals or something you can wash because of the mud you will wade through.”
The report also revealed that, as a matter of fact, “over the years, Abia Poly had contended with myriads of problems. First, it grapples with a precarious financial condition, resulting in its indebtedness to about seven banks. It was gathered that what the management of the institution was doing was tantamount to robbing Peter to pay Paul. A source said what the Rector was doing was ‘to put students’ fees into the bank and collect overdraft to pay salaries. When the school account is in red, he moves over to another bank with the same style. That is why the banks can longer guarantee us credit which we used in paying workers salaries.’
“It was learnt that First Bank has bought off the school’s debts to other banks. According to Nwakodo, “the institution borrowed money from First Bank with the express permission of the governor to primarily clear the institution’s indebtedness to other banks. The condition was that First Bank, which is the borrower, will clear debts to other banks. We want to harmonise our accounts into one bank.’
It was gathered then that the institution was indebted to First Bank to the tune of about N1.4billion and it could rise because of interest. Its wage bill was about N165 million while the state government recently increased its monthly subvention to N90 million. The shortfall is borne by the institution by way of internally generated revenue (IGR), particularly school fees and other levies. School fee in Abia Poly is high even as classrooms are overcrowded. While ND students pay N56,000 per semester, HND students pay N66, 250.
Few days after the report was published, the management addressed a press conference, expressing reservations about some aspects of it. Defending some of the issues highlighted in the report, the management argued that it was not the only institution indebted to a bank or owing lecturers, adding that the money taken from students who use the toilet was used to buy tissue papers.
Barely one month after the report, the tale began to twist, showing that all was truly not well with the institution, thus vindicating Saturday Sun. To start with, the Rector of the institution, Sir Allwell Onukaogu was sacked by the state government over some allegations. His removal came barely seven months to the end of his second tenure. Again, both teaching and non-teaching staff embarked on an indefinite strike because of the backlog of salaries owed them.
Similarly, the Provost of Abia State College of Technical Education, Arochukwu (ASCETA), Dr Christian Nwanmuo, who was recently reappointed against the wish of staffers, was sacked last week by the state government. Indeed, when the news of Nwanmuo’s removal hit town, the school turned to an open house party as workers and students put on their dancing shoes. “This is a welcome development; the best news in recent times,” one of them told the reporter. It was learnt that, as reflection of the mood in the school, all the staff were directed to come to school the day after the provost’s removal with containers of powder.
In a recent save-our-soul letter, the workers complained about “denial of staff promotions, non-financial implementation of promotions since 2008 and non confirmation of staff who are due. Appointment of Deans/Heads of Academic Departments (HODs) and Heads of Administrative Units (HOUs) without qualification and merit and disparity in real terms of salary given to staff on the same rank in different banks.
“Indiscriminate increase in school fees and imposition of levies on, as well as non-provision of necessary facilities for students thereby scaring potential students away and forcing the students population down to less than 1,000 in all departments.
“Proliferation of study centres (currently about 25 of them), thereby bastardizing academic standards and indiscriminate employment of new staff without due process, most of who are placed on salaries above what they earn and by so doing, escalating the wage bill of the college.”
ABSU
Shortly after the report, lecturers at Abia State University, Uturu, went on strike for about two weeks. Their main grouse was that their salaries were not being paid as and when due. There is also the problem of inadequate manpower as well as teaching under uncongenial atmosphere. Meanwhile, the strike has been suspended for now, on compassionate ground, because of students writing their final year exams. Also affected by the shake-up is the College of Health Sciences and Management Technology, Aba where the head accused of running the institution like his personal estate was not reappointed.

Enugu gov, others defy party’s national hqt
■Insist Asogwa must be state chairman
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Enugu State Chapter yesterday held an extra-ordinary meeting of its State Executive Committee (SEC) where it reaffirmed the appointment of Chief Ikeji Asogwa as the new state chairman.
Asogwa was first appointed chairman penultimate week following the resignation of Chief Vita Abba, who has indicated interest in the House of Representatives.
But the National Working Committee of the PDP in Abuja refused to recognise the appointment of the new chairmen in Enugu and a few other states, preferring to recognise Elder David Aja, the deputy chairman of the Enugu State chapter as the one to replace Abba.
However, at the meeting yesterday which took place at the party secretariat, the chapter said it convoked the extra-ordinary meeting at the instance of 86 out of 109 of SEC members in the state.
The party in a four-paragraph communiqué after the meeting signed by its Publicity Secretary, Dr Okey Eze and made available to Saturday Sun charged Asogwa “to take all necessary measures in his capacity as the chairman to oversee and ensure smooth and successful congresses and party primaries and victory for the party at all levels in the 2015 general elections.” The PDP’s ward congresses hold today in the 17 local government areas of the state.
The communiqué reads in part: “Following the request by 86 members out of the 109 members of the State Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, which represent more than two-third of the SEC membership in the state, ably empowered to hold an extra-ordinary meeting in line with Article 24(4) of the PDP Constitution, which stipulates that ‘an extra-ordinary meeting of the State Executive Committee shall be held if requested for, by two-third of the members of the State Executive Committee’, SEC met today, October 31st, 2014 and deliberated on urgent and fundamental issues affecting the party in the state and took the following decisions:
“Noted the resignation of Engr Vita Abba from office as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, which enables him stand for election in the forthcoming party primaries in the state.
“In line with Article 47 (6) of the PDP Constitution, which states that ‘where a vacancy occurs in any of the offices of the party, the executive committee at the appropriate level shall appoint another person from the area or zone where the officer originated from, pending the conduct of election to fill the vacancy’, appointed Chief Ikeje Asogwa who is from the same zone with the former state party chairman as the new chairman of the party in the state, with immediate effect, pending the election of another chairman at a state congress to be convened for that purpose.”
Those who attended the extra-ordinary SEC meeting include Governor Sullivan Chime, his Deputy, Rev. Ralph Nwoye, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Eugene Odo, former Senate President and member of PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Ken Nnamani, members of the National Assembly, a member of Board of Trustees, Rex Onyeabo, national and zonal officers of the party from the state, council chairmen and their deputies, LG party chairmen, state executive members of the party, among others.

Bomb blast kills over 30 in Gombe

Scores injured
It was a sad day in Gombe yesterday as no fewer than 30 persons were feared dead with several others injured following a bomb blast at the state capital’s busiest motor park.
Although the police could not confirm the casualty figure as at press time, there are fears that the death toll could rise owing to the magnitude of the explosion which occurred at 10am in the ever busy Gombe line motor park.
The park located in the heart of the city serves thousands of passengers who daily travel to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe as well as Billiri, Kaltungo and other towns in the Gombe.
A woman who was weeping profusely said she saw the corpse of someone that looked like her brother being evacuated and taken away while she was looking for her sister.
“We were three that came to the park, I don’t know whether they are dead or alive. We were waiting to board a vehicle. I just went outside the park to get recharge card when I heard the explosion,” she said as she wailed.
Saturday Sun learnt that some men drove a car into the park on the pretence of dropping off passengers and left the car inside the park.
The vehicle which make is yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report, exploded shortly after they left, killing many and destroying cars, shops and buildings nearby.
“More than 10 cars are still burning as I speak to you”, Ibrahim Yusuf a vendor near the area said. Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Gombe Operations office and the Nigerian Red Cross and other security agencies were seen evacuating casualties.
“This is one of the worst bomb blasts in the history of Gombe,” a resident who pleaded anonymity said.
“I was sitting here when I heard the blast. Many died. I removed five corpses immediately. One woman lost both legs and hands. It is terrible. Many dead bodies were removed after we rushed the first set of victims to the hospital,” Yusuf Aliyu Kaltungo said.
He said the Federal Medical Centre and the state Specialist Hospital Gombe have become busy as casualties were rushed there with families besieging the facilities to know the fate of their loved ones.
Another eyewitness who sells GSM accessories near the park said he was in his shop when he heard the explosion. Pleading anonymity, he said: “Come and see corpses, blood and fear everywhere. It was horrible. It was really sad”
Commissioner of Police, Gombe State, Kudu Mma Abdullahi who visited the scene disclosed that three persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.
He said: “A vehicle conveying the bombers came into the park with Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs). The vehicle has Yobe number plate. This is surprising how it came to look for passengers in Gombe Line. Three suspects have been apprehended as they fled from the car and we reasonably suspect that they are the persons that brought in the IEDs.”
On the number of the dead, the CP said they were still compiling the casualty figure as there was confusion everywhere amidst efforts to put out the raging fire. He said that, “It is a sad development. It is the same IEDs that was used in Azare, Bauchi last week. I assure the public that we are putting everything under control and people should remain calm.”
