A civic action group, ‘Move on Nigeria’, has accused the United States of fuelling political tension in Nigeria, through meddlesomeness in the country’s election and internal affairs, in a bid to achieve their prediction of Nigeria’s disintegration this year.
The group, in a release signed by its national coordinator, Clem Aguiyi, noted that the US had continued to publicly magnify every challenge of the Nigerian government.
Substantiating, the group alleged that the US had continued to back the ambition of All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, through a political consulting firm, Chicago-based AKPD, run by the administration’s confidante, David Axelrod.
According to the group, the Chicago-based AKPD had admitted to working on behalf of Buhari’s APC party in the past, but claimed to have ceased its ties in March 2014 after the Islamist terror group, Boko Haram, kidnapped hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls.
Citing emails sent between APC party members and advisers, it regarded AKPD’s said disengagement as contradictory, noting that the firm had quietly continued to perform political work on Buhari’s behalf till date.
It further held that the internal emails sent between APC advisers over the past several months and obtained by the Free Beacon, confirmed that their work with AKPD continued till date.
The statement in part read: “In a series of messages between senior APC officials and advisers from September 2014 till late January 2015; polling and other work are repeatedly discussed.
“The meeting went well and the report well received.
Governor Rotimi Amaechi will meet with the AKPD team tomorrow to discuss the facilitation of the event, but no date fixed yet,” APC member, Olubunmi Adetunmbi wrote in one September 23 email to top Buhari adviser, Kayode Fayemi.
Calling on the Department of State Security Services (DSS) and other security agencies to arrest those they called “political mercenaries,” it added that AKPD’s work was again mentioned in a separate chain of emails sent between Buhari’s running mate, Yemi Osinbajo and Fayemi.
“I also think the AKPD surveys also clearly showed that the South-West is the battle ground for this election.
“Osinbajo writes in a discussion about boosting election turnouts for the APC.”
“A third email chain from January 21 shows APC leader, Nasir El-Rufai, discussing an “October 2014 AKPD poll” that he hoped to disseminate to ‘the team’.
“Our intelligence report obtained from sources familiar with the APC’s campaign said that the party had been trying to keep AKPD’s ongoing work quiet. It is rumoured that AKPD employees are being housed in an APC compound located in Lagos, according to multiple sources,” it concluded.
