The
Central African country has been picked by CAF to stage the tournament after
the original host nation Morocco pulled out due to the Ebola crisis.
CAF
has announced that Equatorial Guinea will host the 2015 Africa Cup of
Nations, after “brotherly and fruitful discussions” between Issa Hayatou
and President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of the Central African nation.
The
tournament will be held between January 17 and February 8, as was originally
scheduled by the African football body. Equatorial Guinea, who were
disqualified in June, following a complaint from Mauritania, now qualify to
participate as hosts, CAF confirmed.
“Consequently,
the CAF Executive Committee confirms that the Orange 2015 Africa Cup of Nations
will be held in Equatorial Guinea on the scheduled dates for the tournament and
the national team of Equatorial Guinea is now qualified to take part in the
finals as host nation,” the statement read.
The
four host cities picked are Malabo, Bata, Mongomo and Ebebiyin. The draw
ceremony for the tournament will be held in Malabo on December 3, CAF
confirmed.
Equatorial
Guinea co-hosted the 2012 edition with neighbours Gabon.
The
2015 Afcon was originally assigned to Morocco, but the North African country
requested a postponement due to the outbreak of the Ebola disease.
