Incessant attacks on innocent citizens by members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect is on the rise despite on-going negotiations with the insurgents by the Nigerian government.
Following the fall of Mubi, the second largest town in Adamawa state, the situation has created a pathetic scenario as the number of the internally displaced persons keep rising with many trapped within the Nigeria Cameroon border and an alarming influx of people into Yola, the state capital.
The attacked by insurgents on many local governments in the Northeastern part of the country has given rise to an alarming number of internally displaced persons.
The recent attacks in Mubi, Adamawa state has left many people lost. Those who were lucky to have escaped and made it to Yola, the state capital are yet to recover from the horrific situation they found themselves in. already there can be said to be an alarming number of over 20000 internally displaced persons living in about five camps spread across Adamawa state as provided by the state government. Women and children who are the most vulnerable have been severely hit by the menace. The condition of the people in the camp is so pathetic as they are visibly traumatised at the realization of having been pursued out of their homes with yet an unaccounted number of missing relatives.
One of the survivors at the camp, said, “They came and started shooting people, slaughtering people, breaking people’s shops, they even killed children and shot people at close range or slaughtered them like goats.”
The camps have personnel such as NEMA, SEMA, the Red Cross and several other NGOS who have been very supportive. Medical personnel have had to contain the ranging number of health complications.
One of the medical personnel, said, “Basically it’s diarrhea, malaria, small skin rashes are just the only diseases. We used to have constraints but now the support is a lot better. The basic problem is manpower.”
Ibrahim Hamidu, Red Cross commandant, said, “The number of men that we have registered in this camp are 3015, the number of women are 3105, the number of under-5 male children are 1268, under-5 female children are 1290 and the general total is 9134.”
Adamawa state government has continued to generate a resolve to create more camps to accommodate the continuing influx of internally displaced persons. Government has also continued to dispel rumours aimed at creating fear amongst the people.
The number of internally displaced persons are far more than can be imagined as many are leaving with relatives in individual homes.
