A governorship aspirant on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. David Okpon, has expressed concern over the rate of defection of key members of the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State.
Okpon therefore urged President Goodluck Jonathan and other party executives at the state and national levels to look inward before the situation became intractable.
The aspirant said he would stay in the PDP to fight, saying he does not believe in jumping from one party to another.
“I have decided to stay and fight by offering myself to the people with whom the power resides. I am standing against all odds, all insurmountable odds, to demonstrate that power reside with the people, and this is my strong belief. I would have sat in my house, enjoyed with my children and wife and not be concerned. But because I am concerned, I am standing against imposition and that is why I am in the race.
“I believe that my contribution against imposition and my action to prove that I am against imposition is by stepping out into the race. I know that because I am not a part of the government structure, I believe that I am limited in fighting them, and I also believe that the other people were also limited that was why they left to another party,” Okpon said.
He reasoned that though APC was also a strong vehicle to a destination to which the aggrieved PDP members had defected, “it does not mean that they are on ground to win the election. I do not believe that. I believe it is just a demonstration to show displeasure.
The aspirant also called for reconciliation, stressing that “without reconciliation, we cannot build. The best way forward is to reconcile all parties thereby having a peaceful and quiet society, and on that platform, people will be happy to work, and put their hands together to move the state forward. There is no time to look at who did what to who but we need to reconcile.”
