Ban Ki-Moon said he was appalled by reports that hundreds of people had been killed around the town of Baga. The secretary general of the United Nations condemned what he called “the depraved acts of Boko Haram terrorists”.
Baga was first attacked by the jihadists nine days ago. Since then fleeing residents have reported that hundreds of people were killed and much of the town burnt down. There have also been several suicide bombings in north east Nigeria.
Officials said the suicide bomber who killed 19 people in Maiduguri city on Saturday was a ten year old girl. Two women thought to be in their early 20s blew themselves up in a market in Potiskum in Yobe State on Sunday.
Over the weekend the Nigerian military successfully fought off the Boko Haram fighters who were trying to capture another major town, Damaturu. But on the whole the military has failed to protect the civilians from the relentless violence.
The BBC's correspondent in Lagos reports that Nigeria’s politicians appear more focused on next month’s elections and President Goodluck Jonathan has not commented on the recent violence.
