Ohanaeze sets up panel to probe financial activities

From PETRUS OBI, Enugu
The Ralph Obioha-led Ohanaeze Caretaker Committee yesterday, in Enugu, inaugurated a panel to investigate the management and finances of the Igbo apex body between 2009 and 2014.
The panel, which is headed by former  Biafra warlord, Col. Ben Gbulie, is to obtain the audited accounts of Ohanaeze Ndigbo within the period and  investigate the running of the Ohanaeze Foundation as well as the Ohanaeze Centre for effective leadership.
The nine-man panel is to interview all persons involved in financial transactions with Ohanaeze Ndigbo and any of its organs within the period.
It is to ascertain the disbursement of the N25 million donated by the government of Anambra State for the 2014 Igbo Day celebrations and investigate other matters arising from the activities of Ohanaeze from 2009 to 2014 and make appropriate recommendations.
In an acceptance speech, the panel chairman, Col. Gbulie, pledged that the panel would abide by its terms of reference saying: “The idea is to look into the books and find out the state of our finances. If there are discrepancies, we report; if there are none we will still report.”
He appealed to those to be invited by the panel to appear before it. He said: “they don’t need to wait for us to call them. If they want to clear their names over rumours being peddled here and there, they should come and clear their names with us.
“Anybody, who thinks he has anything to tell us, should come forward or we will be forced to go public.
We want to tell the world that we mean business, we want the world to know that we want our future to be on the correct pedestal, not on the basis of misappropriation of funds.
“But like I said, nobody has been found guilty; it is only when we must have looked into the books that we can make pronouncements.”
Members of the panel include Mr. Felix Mgbada, Emma Nwabalogu, Prof. David Akubukwe, Onochie Mpi, and Ralph Okafor.
Others are Chief Chris Onwuzor, Obi Nweke (Secretary) and Mrs. Ogechi Nwosu (recorder).
