Elders and political stakeholders in Sokoto State have called
for the reinstatement of the security aides withdrawn from the office
of the Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, by the
acting Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba.
Addressing journalists in Sokoto, the elders under the auspices of Sokoto Elders and Political Forum (SEPF), described the police action as ‘needless and unconstitutional’.
They maintained that since the speaker had neither been removed nor stepped down from office, he remained the legitimate number four citizen and should be treated as such.
The group’s spokesperson and erstwhile state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Arizika Tureta, said it was not the duty of the acting IGP to interpret the constitution in that regard.
“We condemn this act of impunity. When has it become the responsibility of IGP to interpret the constitution? The act is condemnable and unnecessary.” The group stated.
It noted that similar defections had been witnessed in the past without any rancour.
The group stated that the decision taken by the speaker was timely, thoughtful and done in accordance to the country’s constitution.
