Abia Assembly Decries Unguarded Utterances Over Terror Suspects

Umuahia — Not satisfied with the uncomplimentary remarks from groups within the Northern zone trailing the recent arrest of suspected Boko Haram insurgents on transit through Abia State axis of Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, the Abia State House of Assembly has cautioned its Jigawa State counterpart to refrain from inflammatory comments capable of setting Nigerian polity ablaze.

Abia House said inflammatory comments from Northern groups over the matter called for concern and must be halted in Nigeria's national interest.

Addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Umuahia, Deputy Speaker and House Committee Chairman on information, Asiforo Okere, said the threat by Jigawa lawmakers to drag Abia State Government to court for the arrest of their indigenes was an empty threat that could only amount to academic exercise.

Abia House contended that Jigawa legislators should know in the first place that the suspects were not arrested by the Abia State Government but security agents discharging their duties, saying directing their grievances to Abia is a "miscarriage of justice."

The lawmakers said the arrest of the terror suspects " is purely a security issue, which must be left in the hands of security experts" without unnecessary interference or unguarded utterances to whip public sentiments.

Abia lawmakers warned the army of critics who have suddenly claimed to be human rights advocates championing the cause of the suspected insurgents to thread with caution, as any sentimental comments on the sensitive issue could plunge Nigeria into ethno- religious unrest.

The House commended the security agents for their vigilance, while imploring Nigerians of all ethnic and religious divides to close ranks with the Federal Government in the ongoing campaign against terrorism.

According to the Abia legislators, Nigeria is at the cross roads, and what the country needs most is fervent prayer.

"Nigeria is faced with serious security challenge, and all we need now from every well meaning citizen is serious prayers", the House said.
