Reps summon NHRC scribe over missing N724m

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts has ordered the Executive Secretary of National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, to appear before it today in connection with a N724 million service wide vote,  allegedly misapplied by the commission.
Chairman of the Committee, Solomon Olamilekan (APC, Lagos), said the committee would order the arrest of Angwe if he failed to honour the summon today.
He said the Commission’s boss had failed to honour previous invitations, reiterating that the committee would declare him missing if he failed to turn up .
Speaking during an interactive session with officials of NHRC last weekend, he said: “We have invited your executive secretary to appear before us but he has deliberately refused to show up, this committee is giving him from now till next week Monday (today) to show up or we will declare him wanted. All we need to hear from him is how N724m service wide vote was spent.”
At the meeting, the commission’s Accountant, Mr. Balarabe Sambo, explained to the committee members why his boss failed to appear before the committee but his excuse was rejected by members who insisted that his boss must appear today.
Meanwhile, officials of the University of Ibadan and the University of Port Harcourt have been given three weeks to present all relevant documents pertaining to how the service wide votes allocated to them were expended.
The required documents must include names of contractors, amounts expended, their certificate of incorporation and bank statements.
