248 containers of power equipment to boost electricity supply –Expert

A maritime expert and consultant to the Federal Ministry of Power, Engr Emmanuel Nweke, has said that the perennial problem of poor electricity supply will soon be a thing of the past once the 248 containers of power equipment hitherto abandoned at the port are deployed to where they are needed.
He said the multi-billion naira Independent Power Project (IPP) equipment imported by the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) were left “stranded” at the Apapa port in Lagos for close to a decade thus compounding the challenge of epileptic power supply in the country.
Nweke while speaking with journalists in Lagos on Monday decried the epileptic power supply experienced in Nigeria.
He noted that Nigerians  would have enjoyed better power supply if past administration had ensured that the abandoned equipment meant to complete major power projects in the country were successfully deployed.
Nweke who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer of International Trading & Contracting Limited, urged Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s drive in ensuring that the power equipment are completely evacuated from the port, whilst affirming the government’s commitment to boosting power generation in the country.
“How can we begin to expect power while the equipment for power generation are not there and we are all expecting power. We will enjoy steady power supply as soon as we see that the government is successful in achieving the project it started with the evacuation of these equipment. What is important is the achievement and ensuring that the equipment are taking to locations where they are needed while investigation is ongoing”
He added” It is so appalling that after 11 years, very important equipment that will actually aid our country to experience the Federal Government promise on power generation were kept in our port for those long years and today the government says they are resolute in delivering those promises and the only way is to get these equipment to their different locations irrespective of who those equipment are in their position,”
On the suitability of the hitherto abandoned equipment owing to the long stay at the power, the Consultant revealed that the materials are cables and other transmission equipment that can stand the test of time.
