Fashola unveils Tejuosho shopping complex for public occupation

The Lagos State Government over the weekend brought succour the way of Tejuosho traders whose shops and wares were gutted by fire on December 18, 2007.
The state governor, Babatunde Fashola, who commissioned the shopping complex stated that although, Tejuosho market was first commissioned in 1975 by the then Military Administrator, Brig. General Mobolaji Johnson as the major market within and around Lagos, the new shape it has assumed will still make it the best around the state.
According to Fashola, by the time the light rail project being undertaken by the state government is completed, movement to and fro the market from any part of the state would be with ease. He noted that the old Tejuosho Market contained a total of 1,184 shops while this new Tejuosho Shopping Complex contains a total of 2640 shops.
He said that disaster control and prevention were highly considered in the new dispensation and to this end, stores have been built to adequately meet the needs of the users and their wares. This he said will make  subletting and street trading a thing of the past.
The governor stated that the unique thing about the complex is the built-in facilities. It is a four storey building connected by lifts with about 4,000 business units, 600 car parking lots, Police Post, waste disposal system. Other facilities include steady electricity and water supply, wide staircases and good ramps, fully equipped fire station and lots of public conveniences.
“The complex is a four storey building (basement, ground + 3 suspended floors). It has a framed structure on structural grid. Natural illumination and ventilation are ensured by the provision of openings and voids on and around the building. Vertical circulation is provided via ample provision of staircases at average distances of 10 meters apart,” he said.
He added that apart from the main shops that cost much, there are about 1,251 others meant for low income starters. He explained that, in other to create customers for the market, the rehabilitation of Tejuosho and Lawanson roads are in progress.
He stated that the way Tejuosho Shopping Complex was designed, will not accommodate any illegal extension and urged the traders to report any attempt by any person or group of persons to create one to the appropriate authority.
