Igini, who spoke in Calabar at a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the INEC at the weekend, said the PVCs would also ensure that only the real owners could use them to vote during election.
He said: “The idea of the PVC is to return power to the people. You saw what happened in Ekiti State when we started the process. So, it is imperative for those who registered in 2011 to ensure that they get their PVCs. On August 9, it will be the turn of Osun State to see its workability.
“The PVCs will also ensure that only its real owner can use it for election. We are taking the processes step by step to ensure success of the exercise.
”It will eliminate multiple voting, which has remained a recurring feature in elections in the country, and will make the actual recorded votes of the electorate to determine those they elect to lead or represent them.”
The REC stated that officials of the INEC would do the distribution of the PVCs in the state from August 15 to 17, with the continuous voters registration following from August 20 to August 25. He added that the three-day distribution exercise would start at 8 a.m. on each of the days slated for the purpose.
He said the distribution of the PVCs would feature the display of the electronic voter register in all the designated polling units in the state, disclosing that the voter cards were distributed in phases in the six geo-political zones of the country.
On what was required from registered voters, Igini said: “All voters are enjoined to come with their temporary voter cards to the polling units where they registered in 2011 and exchange them for the permanent ones as only the permanent ones will be used during the 2015 general elections.”
