The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, and
Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III have established a
partnership on initiatives for sustainable regional peace and security
through the involvement of religious and traditional rulers.
The ECOWAS press statement made available to journalists yesterday, stated that the agreement was reached when President of ECOWAS Commission, Ambassador Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo paid a courtesy visit to the Sultan at his palace in Sokoto and solicited the monarch’s support in this regard, Monday.
While agreeing with the partnership, Sultan Abubakar enjoined
ECOWAS to “review its Conflict Prevention Framework to involve religious
and traditional rulers, and also to intensify measures at curbing the
proliferation of small arms in the region.”
The Sultan assured Ambassador Ouédraogo of his full support and commitment to peace and security as a prerequisite for economic development in the region.
In response to the Sultan’s request, Ambassador Ouédraogo disclosed to the Sultan, plans by the commission to assemble a regional meeting of religious and traditional leaders later this year to stimulate citizen’s participation, ownership of the ECOWAS development and integration process consistent with the objectives of Vision 2020 for ECOWAS of people.
He vowed to support the preservation of rich tradition and history of the Sokoto Caliphate.
The commission delegation included ECOWAS Commissioners for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Mrs. Salamatu Hussaini Suleiman; Education, Science and Culture, Dr. Jean-Pierre Ezin, and the manager of the ECOWAS Peace Fund, Mr. Dieudonne Nikiema.
