INFERNO: Fire Guts Delta’s Multi-billion Naira IPP Project

The multi-billion naira Delta State government-owned Independent Power Plant (IPP) has been gutted by fire.
The project, sited at Oghara, the hometown of former governor of the state, Chief James Ibori, and headquarters of Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state, was ravaged by fire, in a yet to be ascertained circumstance on Monday night.
The extent of damage to the power project could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report yesterday.
The commissioner for power and energy, Gloria Okolubo, led a delegation of the ministry and the contracting firm, Davnotch Nigeria Ltd, to the scene in the early hours of yesterday, apparently to obtain information about the fire and ascertain the extent of damage.
LEADERSHIP could not independently ascertain the fate of the strategic equipment, such as turbines, generators and skips at the project site.
But Davnotch’s general manager, Mr. Phillips Odhomo, told LEADERSHIP on the phone that the major equipment were intact, with the fire only ravaging some accessories.
Odhomo, who said preliminary investigation ruled out sabotage, disclosed that fire from a refuse dump near the scene spread to the plant.
