The trouncing of the APC
by the PDP in Ekiti State last Saturday has set the national leadership
of the party in panic mode with self-styled leader of the party Asiwaju
Bola Tinubu leader the new National Chairman, John Oyegun to
plead with former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola to
help in boosting the dwindling chances of the party ahead of August
governorship election in Osun State.
Tinubu had masterminded the
removal of Oyinlola as governor three years into his second term. The
alleged judicial manipulation has been a subject of litigation and
investigation, with Prince Oyinlola insisting that former President of
Court of Appeal, Justice Salami (retired) was in constant touch with
Tinubu via telephone leading to his ouster.
Tinubu and Oyegun
at the desperate fence mending meeting appealed to Oyinlola to accept
their plea, offering him key positions in the state government to be
formed by Aregbesola, should he be re-elected and the national
government, should APC defeat Jonathan.
The APC leadership it was
gathered, offered on behalf of Aregbesola, four commissionership posts,
three special advisers posts and a host of special assistants positions.
For the commissionership posts, one would be for a key grade A
Ministry.
Oyegun, who spoke first, at the meeting said: “The APC
knows that you are the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic
Party in the face of the law. But we want you to be a part of our new
movement.”
Speaking after Oyegun, Tinubu reportedly shared the same vein with Oyegun, acknowledging Oyinlola’s leadership qualities.
In his response, Oyinlola thanked the leaders of the APC for their
visit and acknowledgement, promising to make consultations with his
followers over the meeting with the APC.
Oyinlola, who acknowledged
that he remained a Peoples Democratic Party member, said he would fight
the case of his removal as National Secretary of the ruling party to a
logical conclusion.
The defeat of Tinubu’s crony, the outgoing Ekiti
State Governor shocked the APC political godfather who is now desperate
to retain his sphere of influence and bargaining block in the APC.
Aregbesola is one of Tinubu’s closest associates, having served him as a
commissioner in Lagos State.
