He made this statement yesterday in Enugu during the opening ceremony of the 25th annual national conference of the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS), IT umbrella body at the Nike Lake Resort Center.
While urging the Federal government to invest heavily in the installation of Close Circuit Television, CCTV in strategic places across the country, he explained that it will nip insecurity at the bud.
Adewunmi maintained that technology like CCTV would go a long in helping to detect criminals. Adding that simple technologies, if deployed would serve as deterant to criminals and terrorists.
He emphasised that the place of biometric can also not be negleted, saying, “Apart from CCTV, government must urgently establish a national biometric database programme to tackle insecurity in the country.
“Appropriate use of ICT tools will effectively tackle insecurity across the nation. As a way forward, there is need for the government address and extract functional utility from the present databases maintained by Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Police, National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Banks among others.
“ICT devices including surveillance cameras, Social Network analysis, Biometry surveillance Data mining, Satellite Imagery, IP devices should be deployed professionally to checkmate insecurity in the country”, he said.
The NCS president hinted that ,”If the reason for abduction of these girls by Boko Haram is their hatred for western education, one wonders why they use techie devices and weapons.
NCS, he said has therefore recommended the immediate and appropriate use of ICT tools to tackle insecurity in the land.
Immediate past President of NCS, Sir, Demola Aladekomo said that security is vital to the success of digital economy.
“We cannot claim to be clamoring for digital when security situation is porous. Therefore it is critical for Nigeria as a nation to put appropriate security measures to secure the country’s sovereignty”.
