CIS urges corps members to train as brokers

The Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) has urged corps members to diversify their professional background by becoming a registered member of the CIS after fulfilling the basic requirements.
According to its Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Adedeji Ajadi, who stated this at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos during a public awareness programme, the Institute occupies a strategic platform within the structure of the Nigerian capital market as it is pre-occupied with the training and certification of stockbrokers
The event, which was part of the NYSC Lagos State Chapter’s Entrepreneurship Scheme, provided platform for the Institute to expose the corps members to the processes of becoming professional stockbroker and the benefits.
Ajadi explained that the Institute was established in 1990 and Chartered by Decree 105 of 1992, adding that at present, there are 1, 500 qualified members with over 14,000 registered students. He stated that members of the Institute cut across a wide spectrum of the economy including: stockbroking firms, issuing houses, Pension Fund Management institutions, banking, finance houses and insurance companies among others.
He identified the following benefits for being a member: diverse employment opportunities in various sectors of the economy globally, flexibility of examination in terms of when to write it and number of courses, opportunity for foreign professional certification in investment advisory services, lucrative and rewarding career, prestigious profession, self- employment with minimum capital etc.
Speaking on how to become a student member, Ajadi said the Institute had been granted an approval to run Professional Diploma in Securities and Investment in addition to the existing Professional Qualification Scheme. He noted that the Professional Diploma in Securities is open to those with Ordinary Level Certificates; CIS approved Diplomas, university degree and Higher National Diploma holders without strong background in numerate subjects and other CIS qualifications. The CIS registrar, who was accompanied by the Institute’s Assistant Director and Head of Membership, Mr. Vincent Adubor, explained that the institute’s functions include conducting stockbroking professional examinations, regulating the practice and conduct of stockbroking by regulating its members, organizing seminars, workshops and symposia for members to keep them abreast of new developments in the market and maintaining professional standard and discipline for the members.
