With seven goals to her name at Canada 2014, Nigeria’s Asisat
Oshoala has become the U-20 Women’s World Cup leading scorer. She is
also the new leader in the race to finish as Canada 2014 top scorer ,
ahead of Germany’s duo of Sara Dabritz and Pauline Bremer.
Oshoala is following the footsteps of legendary Christine Sinclair
and North Korea’s 2006 star, Kim Un-Hwa.The Falconets’ four-goal
heroine, who made five appearances without finding the net at Japan
2012, moved beyond previous record-holders, Desire Oparanozie, Ebere
Orji and Cynthia Uwak – all of whom had five – when she completed her
hat-trick. By increasing her tally further, she became only the third
player in the tournament’s history to score more than three times.
Wednesday’s semi final clash between Nigeria and Korea DPR served
as the highest-scoring semi-final the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup
tournament has ever witnessed, comfortably eclipsing Germany’s 5-1
victory over Korea Republic in 2010.
Speaking on her performance, Asisat Oshoala said the goals just came.
“I never expected to score this much, the chances came and I just utilise them.
We had a good fighting spirit because we had told ourselves that
nobody was going to take our glory from us. We made that promised, so
winning the semi finals means victory at the finals, I am glad I got the
most valuable player for the third time. I dedicate it to my coaches
and team mates.”
