Team Nigeria still in search of Victoria ’94 glory

At the close of proceedings yesterday in Glasgow, Scotland, there were indications that the Victoria ’94 edition of the Commonwealth Games remained the best outing for Team Nigeria in the history of the Games.
Nigeria made their first appearance at the 1950 edition held in Auckland, New Zealand, and has appeared 13 times since then (Glascow 2014 inclusive) but missed four editions – 1962, 1978 (in protest at New Zealand’s policies), 1986 and 1998.
The Commonwealth Games known as the British Empire Games from 1930–1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954–1966 and British Commonwealth Games from 1970–1974 is an international, multi-sports events involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.
The event which was first held in 1930, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 which were cancelled due to the World War II, has taken place every four years with 18 editions held so far.
Joshua Majekodunmi won Nigeria’s first medal in 1950 at the High Jump event and Nigeria’s team to the Games has won at least one medal at every Games attended, including a high of 37 in Victoria 1994.
