Boko Haram: South-East group cautions northern politicians

A South-East political pressure group, Enugu Roots Initiative (ERI), has cautioned northern politicians not to meddle in police investigation of the arrested 400 suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Abia State.
About two weeks ago, security agents arrested 35 buses carrying people suspected to be members of Boko Haram in Asa, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State.
But certain northern politicians later said the suspects were traders on business trip and demanded their immediate release.
The ERI in a statement issued yesterday by its Secretary General, Mr. Uche Nwegbo,in Abuja, said security personnel should be allowed to do their job without interference.
The Enugu Roots Initiative aligned itself with the position of South-East governors who, at their meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan, vowed not to allow members of the outlawed sect to gain a foothold in any part of the zone.
The group particularly commended Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, for ensuring that members of the Biafran Zionist Movement (BZM), who attempted to take over the State Broadcast Service (ESBS) were arrested.
Expressing confidence in the ability of the governors to contain any attempt by Boko Haram to enter the South-East, the ERI noted that the zone had been the most peaceful in the country, and commended the measures taken by the governors to maintain peace and order in their respective states.
“Enugu State has remained the most peaceful state in the country since 2007. We commend the state governor for returning peace to the state after many years of Hobbesian atrocities.
“We hope that in choosing his successor, the governor will look for someone among the army of aspirants, who can maintain the peace Enugu State presently enjoys,” the group noted.
It appealed to the people of the state to join hands with the governor in his developmental strides
