Emefiele assumes office as CBN governor


The new Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, formally assumed office yesterday making him the 10th indigenous governor in the history of the apex bank.
According to a statement, Emefiele, who was cleared by the Senate on Wednesday, March 26, arrived the CBN headquarters at 7.30 am and was received by the four deputy governors as well as the staff.
The deputy governors and the management staff were led by Dr. Sarah Alade whose tenure as Acting Governor ended last Monday, June 2 to welcome him.
At the brief formal handing over, the new governor thanked the erstwhile Acting Governor, Alade and other deputy governors for gracing his formal assumption of office.
He is expected to have his maiden World Press Conference tomorrow where he will unveil his agenda for CBN and the people of Nigeria.
Emefiele is the immediate-past Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank Nigeria Plc. He is expected to bring along his over 20 years of banking management experience to his new office.
Emefiele is a 1984 graduate of Finance and an MBA Degree holder from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is also an alumnus of Executive Education at Stanford University, Harvard University (2004) and Wharton Graduate School of Business (2005).
He was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan to take over the job of the suspended governor of CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, whose five-year tenure expired on June 2, 2014.
Sanusi, whose tenure rocked the banking industry with great tempest was later implicated by the Financial Regulatory Council (FRC) for financial recklessness and abuse of office.
Consequently, he was suspended from office. Sanusi has since contested his suspension in the court.
