Protesting students ground Lagos

Motorists and commuters went through hellish experience yesterday as protesting students of the Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo, blocked the popular Lagos/Abeokuta expressway for hours.
The students, who were protesting the geometric increment in their tuition fees, caused confusion as the ever-busy six-lane road was brought to a standstill.
The aggrieved students had stormed the popular Obafemi Awolowo Road, Ikeja, in over 10 buses marked ‘LASU Shuttle,’ causing gridlock.
At about midday, the protesting students marched on the Lagos/Abeokuta expressway and used an articulated lorry to block the highway.
The impact was instantaneous as a  long queue of vehicles lined the road from Ikeja Bus-stop to Oshodi end of the road, and Ikeja towards Iyana-Ipaja. Commuters were forced to trek long distances while motorists either made u-turn to alternative routes or remained on the spot till normalcy returned.
The students later marched towards Oshodi bus terminus, singing and calling on the Babatunde Fashola-led state government to accede to their request by reducing the high tuition fee slammed on them.
Yesterday’s protest came less than 24 hours after the authorities of the university ordered students to vacate the campus.
