..He is a liar, says Fele
Former chairman of Oyo State chapter of the National Union of Road
Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Lateef Akinsola (a.k.a Tokyo) escaped
death by the whiskers in Ibadan on Saturday when suspected thugs
attacked him.In the attack, no fewer than six of his supporters were
severely injured.
Akinsola was accompanied by some of his supporters to the residence
of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Haruna Suara, to honour an
invitation from the Imam when the attempt was made on his life.
He was whisked away from the Chief Imam’s residence in an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) on the intervention of the Oyo State Police Command.
Eyewitnesses account revealed that no fewer than 20 suspected thugs stormed the venue.
Daily Sun learnt that the suspected thugs arrived at the scene with several dangerous weapons and unleashed terror on Akinsola’s supporters, who were waiting outside for their boss.
While the attack lasted, Tokyo fingered and named some boys of the incumbent Chairman, Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde a.k.a. Fele as the masterminds of the botched attempt on his life.
Tokyo, while recounting his ordeal, said : “I was at the Chief Imam of Ibadan’s residence to honour his invitation with some of my supporters when they attempted to kill me.
“My supporters were attacked while I was being attended to by the Imam in his house at Agbeni area of Ibadan.
“Thank God my supporters were outside when I was inside with the Imam, maybe I would have been dead by now,” Tokyo told newsmen.
Among Tokyo’s supporters who were injured are Bashiru Saheed, Agboola Rasak, Liadi Akande, Rilwan Akinsola and Alani Adaramola.
But Oyerinde told journalists that those Tokyo mentioned were at NTA Ibadan programme (2nd Ramadan lecture of Alhaji Arisekola-Alao) when the incident happened. He said the police should conduct thorough investigation on the matter and get a video clip of the programme and compare it with the timing of the said attack. “We have met Alhaji Tokyo on several occasions and we have never attacked him. We are not a violent union again. We will continue to maintain peace in the state.”
Oyerinde maintained that his boys could not have attacked Tokyo, adding that, “we appeal to the state government to call him to order so as not to plunge the union into another avoidable blood-letting of the past.
The state command’s spokesperson, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, confirmed the incident.
Ilobanafor told newsmen that suspected thugs attacked supporters of Akinsola where he had gone to honour an invitation of the Chief Imam.
She said the command reacted swiftly to the call for re-enforcement by the Mapo Police Station where the attack was reported.
“The command dispatched police teams and an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) to the scene to stop the violence and rescue Akinsola.
“We are yet to make arrests because the place was very rowdy and we have to stop that first and later make arrests based on identification by the witness.
“We have advised those injured to go for treatment and later come back to help us in our investigations at tracking down the culprits. We will get them and make them face the full wrath of the law to serve as deterrent,” she said.
