Customs targets N1.2trn revenue projection

Monthly collection hits N100bn
With its monthly generated revenue hitting an all-time high of N100 billion the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Abdullahi Inde Dikko has expressed optimism that the service would likely meet its N1.2 trillion 2014 revenue projection.
At the beginning of every fiscal year, the Finance Ministry usually projects the revenue attainable for the NCS after looking into several indices like cargo throughput, concessions and other economic factors.
Dikko who dropped the cheering news at a recent forum in London where he addressed the international business community on the benefits of its Pre-Arrival Assessment Report (PAAR) Destination Inspection package, described the launch of PAAR as breath of fresh air to the ports clearance procedures in Nigeria.
“It has also helped the NCS to build stronger relationship with the business sector”, he stated. He further noted that the system recognizes stakeholders with integrity, adding that importers and operators who have demonstrated high level of transparency in their declarations are flagged on the PAAR platform.
“To encourage them, 175 of them have been admitted into a new Fast Track system. These companies now enjoy special concessions like blue lane selection, inspection at owners premises and exclusive membership of the Customs Compliance Ambassadors Group”, he explained.
In a related development, the Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘A’, Ikeja of the Service has recorded massive seizures valued  at N483,324,260.00  with a payable duty of N263,086,234, with a Duty Paid Value  of N746,410,494.000 between January to May, 2014.
It also said 88 suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures.
Spokesman of the command; Uche Ejesieme quoted, the Controller Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’,Comptroller Nuhu Isa Mahmoud, as saying  that, the performance was consequent upon the resolve of the unit to strengthen its operational apparatus through a well tailored strategic approach, which includes the use of Information Communication Technology ( ICT),  intelligence and information gathering.
Some of the items seized by the unit include: bags of  illegally imported parboiled rice, cartons of foreign frozen poultry products, used tyres and other general goods .
The Controller advised smugglers operating in the South-Western axis to have a re-think and channel their resources towards a more meaningful investment rather than smuggling, as he promised that the unit will stop at nothing in its effort to rid the areas under his watch of smuggling activities.
