The Federal Government today inaugurated the technical committee on the dual mode with regards to the degree awarding status of Colleges of Education.
With this development, the COEASU strike may be called off in days.
The committee is meant to address the concerns of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, on the agitation that the Colleges of Education award both NCE and First Degree.
Ministe of State for Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike said that this agitation has been one of the core demands of COEASU, pointing out that with the inauguration of the committee he believes that COEASU will reciprocate the gesture of the government.
He added that the Federal Government has made several efforts to meet the demands of the unions in a bid to end the strike actions.
Barr. Wike said that the specific term of reference of the committee is to look into the issue of awarding both NCE and Degree by the Colleges and to advise government as appropriate.
The members of the Committee which is chaired by Permanent Secretary of Federal Ministry of Education are drawn from COEASU, ASUP and other relevant key government agencies.
Barr. Wike said that Nigerian students have suffered enough, noting that this is the time to consider their plight and end the strike.
In an interview after the event, COEASU President, Emmanuel Nkoro commended the Minister for the bold step. He said that the end of the strike was in sight, pointing out that the union will meet with the Minister to get the commitment that non of its members will be victimized over the strike.
