Funke Akindele VS Queen Nwokoye: Who is Queen of comedy?

Comedy used to be the exclusive preserve of the male gender. Even among  stand-up comedians, women were few and in between. However, today, the Nigerian entertainment industry is replete with dozens of female humour merchants either as actors, on-air-personalities or stand-up comedians. This week’s Showdown features two top Nollywood comedienes as Funke Akindele and Queen Nwokoye lock horns.
Funke Akindele:
Olufunke Ayotunde Akindele aka Funke Akindele, was born in Ikorodu, Lagos State. She started her acting career as a teenager but had her major outing in 1997 in the United Nations-sponsored family television series, I Need To Know, where she played Bisi. Akindele, who is also a film producer, holds a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from the Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, and a Degree in Law, from the University of Lagos. Akindele, the second child from a family of six
in 2009, won the African Movie Academy Awards for Best Actress In A Leading Role. Some of her movie credits include Jennifer, Girls on Fire, Angelina, Sherikoko, Osuofia Goes To School, Taiwo Taiwo, and Atlanta among others.

Queen Nwokoye:
Queen Nwokoye is an indigene of Ihembosi, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Anambra State. She had her education at Air Force Primary School and Queens Secondary School and proceeded to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, where she obtained a degree. She joined Nollywood in 2004 when she starred in her debut movie, a comedy entitled Nna Men. Today, she has featured in over a hundred movies and her works include Ada Mbaano, Paulicap & Perpetua, Ladies Men, Heart Of A SlaveEvil Queen, Her Majesty, Clash of Interest, and Koko Babes among others.

It’s Funke  –Lizzy Chidiogo, accountant
Did you watch Funke Akindele in the popular Jennifer series? There is no need for me to say much other than inform you that there’s no competition. Funke has proved that she is the ultimate star as far as comic roles are concerned; she is just incredible!

Queen is amazingly humourous – Jane Francis, undergraduate
If I hadn’t watched Ada Mba Ano, I wouldn’t have thought twice before writing Queen off. I never really considered her a comic actress. However, she humbled me because she was amazingly humorous in that movie. If not for her superlative performance in Ada Mba Ano, I would have joined the old bandwagon that rated Funke as the most humorous actress in Nollywood; Queen is my numero uno.

Funke is the funniest Nollywood actress ever – Femi Adeyemi, postgraduate student
There is no better female comedian in Nollywood than Funke. There may be one in future but for now, it’s Funke.

Funke is better Malachy Edem, photographer
Everybody knows that Funke Akindele is in a class of her own. She is unique and versatile and is better than Queen Nwokoye.

No basis for comparison –Adeyinka Adeleke, teacher
Why should you compare Queen Nwokoye to Funke Akindele? Come on, Funke is light years ahead of Queen. I am not saying that Queen is not good. What I’m trying to point out is that Funke is better than her in interpreting humorous roles.

I’ll go for Queen Adaora Adeyemi, civil servant
I think Queen is a great comic. I also know that Funke is awesome. But when it comes to humorous role interpretation, I would go for Queen.

Give it to Funke –Constance Anyachi, banker
Please, don’t downgrade my favourite star, Funke. Why would you pair her with Queen? Queen is Funke’s senior in Nollywood no doubt but pairing them amounts to downgrading Funke Akindele because she is far more humorous than  Queen.

They are both creative Ernest Arua, businessman
The truth is that both Queen and Funke are creative artistes. They can use both English and vernacular freely and effectively in role interpretation. Another thing they have going for them is the fact that they are not restricted to comic roles alone.

Funke is greater –Angweh Job, undergraduate
Aside Jennifer which shot Funke to limelight, she has also featured in many great comedy films such as the one she did with Nkem Owo entitled Osuofia Goes To School and Sherikoko to mention a few. On the contrary, how many has Queen done? As far as I am concerned, Funke is Nollywood’s Queen of humour.

Funke, an embodiment of humour  –Chidiogo Susan
One thing about Funke is that she is a natural comedian. Everything about her is humour. She uses all parts of her body to interpret her roles and everything about her is funny. I just wonder why any man should let go such a talented and gifted woman after marrying her.

Give it to Queen – Abimbola Oyebamike, undergraduate
Funke is a fantastic artiste but my problem with her is that sometimes, she over-acts like Nkem Owoh and Tonto Dike. And the annoying thing is that film directors usually fail to call them to order. But truly, I’ve never seen Queen over-act in any movie. And for that I rate her higher than Funke.

Funke is a master comedian Kelvin Ukoh, teacher
Nobody can deny the fact that Funke is a master comedian; a natural. Queen is a talented and beautiful actress no doubt but my honest submission is that Funke is better. But I give both actresses thumbs up for their flexibility in switching roles and the ability to act both in English and vernacular.
