Impeachment: Nasarawa Assembly orders CJ to set up investigative panel

Members of Nasarawa State House of Assembly yesterday directed the state Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman Dikko, to constitute a seven-man panel to probe alleged gross misconduct and mismanagement of state’s fund by Governor Umaru Al-Makura.
The lawmakers gave the directive through the Clerk of the House, Ego Maikeffi, during their sitting held amidst tight security for about 20 minutes.
The motion to that effect was moved by the Majority Leader, Godiya Akwashiki (Peoples Democratic Party Nasarawa Eggon West) and seconded by Muhammad Baba Ibaku (PDP Udege/Loko). It was supported by all the 20 PDP members in the House, who were present at the sitting. Consequently, the Speaker, Musa Muhammad, directed the clerk to communicate the resolution of the House to the state chief judge.
Shortly after the sitting, the lawmakers left for Abuja from where they came for yesterday’s sitting.
It was gathered that efforts to break the ranks of the state lawmakers by the executive, including the involvement of traditional rulers in the state failed.
Meanwhile, a member of the state House of Assembly has denied the impeachment threat against the Speaker, Muhammad, and the Majority Leader, Akwashiki, if any of them withdrew from the impeachment move.
The member, who did not want his name in print, stated this shortly after the sitting of the Assembly yesterday.
He said: “Except the four All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers, the 20 PDP lawmakers are intact, there is no shaking.”
On Monday last week, the state legislators served an impeachment notice through the media on Governor Al-Makura over alleged gross misconduct and mismanagement of the state’s fund.
