Lawan, who spoke to journalists on phone from Saudi Arabia, where he had gone to perform the lesser hajj (Umrah), said the leadership of the House and more than two-thirds of its members were behind Governor Shettima, adding that the Assembly was more concerned about how to return peace to the troubled state.
He said the claim by the House’s Majority Leader, Idrissa Jidda, that most members were defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with former governor Ali Modu Sheriff was a personal opinion, which did not reflect the position of the leadership and other members.
A newspaper report (not Daily Sun) had quoted Jidda as saying Sheriff, who recently announced his defection to PDP, was set to plot the outright impeachment of the governor and force his Yobe State counterpart, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam to move from APC to PDP.
But the speaker insisted that the report was untrue, saying: “As we speak now, I am with 19 members of the Assembly here in Saudi and all of us are not happy with the majority leader’s false claim. Other members have been calling me from Nigeria, expressing their unhappiness. We all have the same position, which is to stand by the Governor, Kashim Shettima.
“The leadership and members of the Borno State House of Assembly are 100 per cent behind Governor Shettima. We are not moving an inch to anywhere, we are fully behind him. I know the opinion of more than two-thirds of the members, I don’t know the opinion of the leader and he is free to go to any party of his choice. We are in a democracy but he should not speak for others, he should speak for himself.”
