According to the National Coordinator of the group, Tony Prest, the group was not campaigning for the president’s re-election yet, saying the law forbade any political party from campaigning until it was legal to do so.
“We are only mobilising support for whom we think can solve the country’s problems,” he said.
The APC in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, had described as callous and insensitive the supposed campaign by GEJites for the president’s re-election on the same spot where the ‘bring back our girls’ campaigners had staged daily protests demanding the safe return of the over 200 Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents.
Prest said Jonathan’s transformation agenda on governance were tackling most development challenges such as poverty, unemployment, security and the deplorable state of infrastructure.
He said: “The APC should know Nigeria is a free country and everyone has the right to support whoever he or she wants. Even the freedom of association is guaranteed.”
The same right that ‘bring back our girls’ protesters have is the same we the GEJites have. We have a right to seek for volunteers to support the president, to enable him rule Nigeria perfectly.
“The president had expressed his deep concern over the state of security and his administration is working hard to accomplish the task at hand. But this is being misused by partisan critics to suggest inaction or even weakness.
“Jonathan has assured that his government, security and intelligence services have spared no resources, have not stopped and will not stop until the girls are returned home and the terrorists who took them are brought to justice.”
