2015: Crisis hits Kaduna PDP

As Sule Lamido’s posters flood state
Fresh crisis is brewing in the Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the Elders’ Forum from the southern zone of the state, yesterday said there will be no automatic ticket for all serving elected officials in the state.Coming short of dismissing the endorsement of some political office holders as a charade, the group said: “We are completely studying the endorsement that was done by our elected people. We will go back to our villages to seek their opinion, even though we already know; but we will go back and confirm because we respect them and hold their trust.” This is, however, coming on the heels of a fresh push by a body known as, ‘Sule Lamido Support Group’ for the Jigawa State governor to make himself available for the presidential race in 2015.
Although Lamido is yet to make any categorical statement on whether or not he would run, the support group, yesterday flooded Kaduna metropolis with his posters, insisting that he remained the PDP’s best to win the Presidency next year.
The Southern Kaduna elders’ position runs counter to the position of the party in the zone, which had gathered last week, to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo and Governor Yero and his deputy, for another term in 2015.
It also endorsed Senator Nenadi Usman and several others, elected on the platform of the party for 2015.
But the elders’ forum, led by Senator Haruna Zego, who is one of the surviving elite in the party from the zone, said the people would reject imposition and financial inducement from any quarter.
Addressing journalists in Kaduna, the Chairman of the PDP Unity Forum of Southern Kaduna, Senator Zego, said: “Please, get me right and clear, we are yet to meet; but as far as PDP in Southern Kaduna is concerned, there is no automatic ticket to anybody, not even in Kaduna State. No money, no force, no intimidation and divide and rule will work over us.
“The generality of Southern Kaduna people are for President Jonathan, but any other person will not have automatic ticket in Southern Kaduna. This is a statement of fact and by the grace of God, you will see, because we don’t arrogate power to ourselves, but saying the position of the conscious people of our area.
“I repeat, there is no automatic ticket and there will be none in Southern Kaduna, outsiders should allow us decide our future because we are capable of handling ourselves and we will not tolerate any form of imposition.”
Efforts to get Lamido’s Director of Press, Umar Kyari, to comment failed as his lines did not go through when Daily Sun made attempts to reach him.
However, a source close to the Dutse seat of power told Daily Sun: “I can confirm to you that the man (Lamido) knows nothing about the posters. However, just yesterday (Monday), people called us from Daura (in Katsina) to say they saw Oga’s posters there too.
“The truth is that nobody that visits Jigawa and sees what the man has done with limited resources would not wish the man replicates it at the national level.
“You need to see the new Dutse International Airport. And only last weekend, the airport took delivery of three new fire-fighter trucks, with modern and latest technology. Go and crosscheck, not even Abuja has that kind of truck.
“It is the latest in the world. So, tell me, who is it that won’t wish that kind of a man become our president?”
