Adamawa: Confusion in PDP over waiver for Ribadu, Marwa, others

For the second time in two weeks, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee met last night without a pronouncement on waiver for the former presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. Also awaiting automatic waivers to enable them seek for the party’s ticket are former military administrator of Lagos State, Buba Marwa, and the governorship candidate of the defunct ACN in Adamawa at the 2011 general elections, Marcus Gundiri.
Checks by Daily Sun revealed that at a meeting between the party governors and President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday, the governors allegedly kicked against the perceived support by the Presidency for Ribadu.
At a follow-up meeting held yesterday at the Presidential Villa, between the Adamu Mu’azu-led National Working Committee, President Jonathan, the governors and some elders of the party, the governors stood their ground.
A source at the meeting revealed that the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Tony Anenih, supported the governors as he expressed concern that granting waivers to Ribadu and others would encourage disloyalty to the party.
Also, there were indications that the party may settle for the acting governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, as the PDP governors and certain elders of the party were said to have made a case for him at the meeting.
But there was confusion at the party’s national secretariat, as the PDP NWC was yet to constitute a committee that would screen the aspirants as at last night.
Speaking with newsmen, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Olisa Metuh, said the committee would be constituted.
“May I inform you that the screening committee is going on tomorrow (today). It will start by 10am and will screen the aspirants. On the issue of waiver for the gubernatorial primaries, the NWC has not sat as at now. So, maybe, we will have a meeting today, and then I will brief you after the meeting.
“But for now, we have not sat. We went to the Villa only for a meeting between the executive, the legislature and the party.
