President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, at the launch of the school for Almajiri in Sokoto, registered 25 of the youths into the new model boarding school, equipped with modern facilities.
The launch of the school at Gagi, Sokoto, is the first of 400 of such schools to be built in the 19 northern states of the federation.
President Jonathan, who also provided the pupils with uniforms and school bags before handing over the school to Sokoto State government, said: “Federal government has so far constructed 35 of such model schools. States with large populations of Almajiri will have both boarding and day schools.”
He said the first model school with facilities such as language laboratory, recitation hall, classrooms, dormitories, clinic, vocational workshop, dining hall and Mallam quarters, will set the pace for such other commissioning.
He said the schools would be monitored on a continuous basis to ensure compliance with minimum academic standards for basic education.

“Unfortunately, and in spite of the best effort of government, the goal of providing access to quality education has not been fully realised in Nigeria as the North- West geo-political zone alone accounts for almost five million which is over 60 per cent of the total population of Almajiri nationwide,” President Jonathan said.
In his speech, the Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Sa’ad III, said the gesture of the Federal Government was a step in the right direction.
He said: “This has gone a long way in providing succour to the teeming millions roaming the streets.”
The Sultan promised to mobilise the various communities in the state for an effective role in the mobilisation of Almajiri.
In his response, Sokoto State governor, Aliyu Wammako Magatakarda, directed local government chairmen in the state to replicate the gesture in their various communities.
He assured that his government would leave no stone unturned in efforts to realise the dreams of a good Almajiri education system in the state.
Minister of Education, Prof Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, assured that other Almajiri schools would be ready for commissioning soon.
She said UBEC will continue to work with states to strengthen the schools, adding that 51 of the schools would be provide in the first phase of the project.
The minister assured that the schools would be equipped with basic facilities to promote the learning of Islamic religious knowledge and western education.
