A Muslim on Eid-l-Adha day

EID-l-Adha is a festival of sacrifice in Islam. It is also known as ‘Eidul kabir’. It is celebrated on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah by Muslims world-over. According to majority of scholars, it is obligatory Sunnah. The days of sacrifice are 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th Dhul-Hijjah.

Preparation: Start preparation for ‘Id as early as possible (i.e. immediately after Fajr Salat, with zikr-remembrance of Allah, tilawah-recitation of Qur’an and dua’-prayer etc).

Brush the teeth; perform ghusl (bath) of eid, Apply perfume (men only), and wear best of your clothes. Delay eating until you returns from the ‘Eid salah. Go out for ‘Eid with all your family (male, female, old and young) through one route and return through another route.

Pronounce the remembrance of Allah frequently (Q2:203) e.g. “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laillaha ila Allah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, walillahil-hamd. Perform Salatul ‘Eid: (two Rakat) in congregation, listen to Eid sermon after Salah. Witness the slaughtering of the sacrificial animal at the Eid ground. Greet one another with “Taqabbal Allah minna wa minka” (May Allah accepts it from us). Be happy and filled with gratitude to Allah. You may engage in light sport, playing, and rejoicing within the bounds of Shariah.

Bounds of Shariah

Killings of Sacrificial animal: The Animal must meet the conditions for sacrifice (e.g. must be healthy, mature, free from any fault etc.) be kind to it and it must be fed adequately. Place it on the floor gently; keep the knife away from its sight; tie the legs, cover its eyes and let it face the Qiblah.

The knife must be very sharp, so much so that the least amount of force or pressure is needed to slaughter the animal, so it feels the least amount of pain; locate the esophagus; say: “Bismillah Allahu Akbar” and recite the following: “Allahuma, ini wajjahtu wajjhiya lilazi fatara samawati wal arda alaa milata Ibrahima hanifan, wama ana minal-Mushirikin.

Inna salati, wa nusukii, wamahayayah, wamamatii, li-Lahi rabil alamiin, Lasharika lahu wabizalika umirtu, wa ana minal-Muslimeen. Allahuma azah minka wa laka; cut the esophagus and jugular veins nicely at ones; don’t lift the knife until you are sure it’s dead; don’t wash immediately; don’t kill one at the sight of the other; remember Qur’an 22:37 emphasizes that Allah does not need the blood nor the flesh of the meat but the taqwah (piety) of Allah in killing the ram.

Distribution of the animal: It should be divided into three parts, (i) one for your family (ii) for sadaqah and (iii) for hadya (gift).
