Obasanjo Gives Jonathan A Knock, Scores Performance Below Average

Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has given President Goodluck Jonathan an abysmal report sheet on his governance, rating the president's performance as “below average”.

Obasanjo who was speaking at the ongoing Ake Arts and Book Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, titled ‘Defining a legacy,’ added that security is the greatest danger Nigeria is currently facing.

When Obasanjo was asked to rate the present government of Jonathan, he answered, “His performance is below average. I will not accept responsibility for his performance. There is nobody that gets such a position without being helped.”

The former president also said he deserved credit for helping an individual from a minority tribe become Nigeria’s President. He said he "Rather than take blame for bringing Jonathan to power, I should be taking credit.”

Obasanjo said, “The biggest problem we have in Nigeria is that we have regional leaders, but no national leader.
“I have always believed that our problem as a country is that at independence we did not have a true leader.”
“Yar’Adua gave me concrete evidence that he was healthy.”

Meanwhile, the Presidency on Friday said a statement credited to Obasanjo that President Goodluck Jonathan’s performance is below average was “not true and in error.”

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, described Obasanjo’s statement as untrue and baseless.

“If indeed former President Obasanjo said that, that statement was in error because no government since independence has done close to 50 per cent of what this administration has done in less than four years,” Okupe said.
