4 killed, 13 injured in another Kano blast

As Boko Haram unleashes female bombers on residence
Boko Haram insurgents, for the second day running unleashed female bombers on Kano metropolis yesterday, killing four residents and injuring 13 in two explosions. The terrorists had on Sunday at 2pm attacked St. Charles’ Catholic Church, along Nomansland in Sabon Gari area of Kano. Five people died in the explosions. The victims were a minor, two females and two men, one of them a soldier who kept guard on the church’s premises. This is even as the Islamists sect last week stormed a luxury bus motorpark in the metropolis, leaving six people dead.
In yesterday’s attack, the first bomb went off at the NNPC mega station along Hotoro Quarters at 10am. The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was targeted at kerosene customers who besieged the station with jerry cans to buy the commodity at government approved rate.
Eyewitnesses said an innocent  looking female bomber, pretending to be a kerosene customer, found her way into the station, while concealing an IED inside her hijab (veil).
The police command’s spokesman, Mr Magaji Majiya, an Assistant Superintendent, said in a statement, today,  July 28, 2014 at about 10:00am, the police command received a distress call that there was a bomb blast at NNPC mega station located at Hotoro Quarters, Maiduguri Road, Kano.
“On receipt of the information, the command’s EOD operatives were immediately mobilized to the scene where it was discovered that the  incident occurred when kerosene is being sold at the filling station, a woman pretending to be a customer, but had an IED (Explosive) concealed in her veil, blew herself up with it and injured 10 others.
“The victims were immediately rushed to hospital. Three of them were so far confirmed dead while seven are responding to treatment. The Kano police command EOD (Anti-bomb squad) personnel and other officers have sealed off the scene to ensure no other explosives are left behind. However, there was no fire outbreak at the filling station”, he stated.
But just as the dust of this explosion was settling down, yet another bomb exploded at the Kano International Trade Fair complex along Zoo Road. Confirming the second explosion, the police said the blast was as a result of a bomb detonated by a young girl, who wanted to gain entry into the complex during an event.
ASP Majiya also told Daily Sun that the lady who detonated the blast at about 1pm, hid the explosion inside her veil. He explained that the terrorists discharged  her concealed explosive after she was stopped for searching by securitymen at the entry post of the complex, adding that the bomb killed her instantly.
Security sources said that six security personnel were injured by the blast, two of them police officers while the rest were of the state Hisbah Command..
ASP Majiya confirmed that the injured officers have been treated and discharged, while adding that investigations into the two explosions have commenced.
Checks revealed that the spate of bomb explosions in the state capital has forced Muslim faithful celebrating the Eid El fitr and other residents in the state to stay indoors for most of the day.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kano State chapter, Bishop Ransome Beko, condemned the attack on the Catholic Church, saying it was an unfortunate incident. He appealed to Christian youths to remain calm, but pray for an end to insurgency in the state and indeed, Nigeria.
