Glasgow 2014: Opara wins Nigeria’s first medal

Nigeria’s Nkechi Opara has won the country’s first medal in weightlifting at the ongoing Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Opara, 18, picked the bronze behind Indian duo of S. Khumukcham and M. Chanu Saikhom who won gold and silver medal respectively in the 48kg category.
In the snatch, the Abia State-born athlete lifts 70kg, just as she improved by lifting 92kg in the clean and jerk event to record 162kg in total.
Khumukcam of India who won the category total 173kg, while her second placed compatriot, M. Chanu Saikhom finished with 170kg in the category.
Nigeria is parading 15 weightlifters in the Games, and the Nigerian Weightlifting Federation head coach, Emmanuel Oshoma, has assured that all the lifters have a good chance of winning medals in Glasgow.
Four years ago in New Delhi, India, Team Nigeria got 11 gold, eight silver and 14 bronze medals to place 13th on the final medals’ table.
