The three were visiting their father in Mexico and they have not been seen since. MATAMOROS, Mexico (AP) — Authorities are investigating a possible police connection to the killing of three U.S. citizens visiting their father in Mexico who were found shot to death along with a Mexican friend more than two weeks after going missing.
Parents of the three siblings, whose bodies were identified Thursday, have said witnesses reported they were seized by men dressed in police gear calling themselves "Hercules," a tactical security unit in the violent border city of Matamoros heavily racked by cartel infighting. Nine of the unit's 40 officers are being questioned, Tamaulipas state Attorney General Ismael Quintanilla Acosta said.
It would be the third recent case of alleged abuse and killings by Mexican security forces and the first to involve Americans.
The country already is engulfed in the case of 43 teachers college students missing in southern Guerrero state at the hands of a mayor and police working with a drug cartel. Fifty-six people are under arrest, including dozens of police officers. In June, soldiers killed 22 suspected gang members in Mexico state, then altered the scene and intimidated witnesses to hide the fact that most of the dead were executed after they surrendered, a National Commission on Human Rights report said last week. Three soldiers face murder charges.
"We will apply the full force of the law and zero tolerance," Tamaulipas Gov. Egidio Torre Cantu said, lamenting the death of the three Americans and a Mexican citizen, even though their identities had yet to be confirmed by DNA.
Presidential spokesman Eduardo Sanchez declined comment when asked about the newest case. The U.S. Embassy said it was aware of the reports but had no information to share "due to privacy considerations."
The father of the three Americans, Pedro Alvarado, identified his children from photographs of the bodies showing tattoos, Quintanilla told Radio Formula. Clothing found with the bodies also matched that of Erica Alvarado Rivera, 26, and brothers, Alex, 22, and Jose Angel, 21, who disappeared Oct. 13 along with Jose Guadalupe Castaneda Benitez, Erica Alvarado's 32-year-old boyfriend.
Each was shot in the head and the bodies were burned, most likely from lying in the hot sun for so long, Quintanilla said.
Tamaulipas authorities said it could take 24 to 48 hours for DNA tests to confirm that the bodies were those of the Alvarado siblings, who were last seen in El Control, a small town near the Texas border west of Matamoros, about to return home to Progreso, Texas.
"They were good kids," said an aunt, Nohemi Gonzalez. "I don't know why they did that to them."
The three siblings shared their mother's modest brick home on a quiet street in Progreso less than three miles from the border. Erica, who has four children between the ages of 3 and 9, had been scheduled to begin studying to become a nursing assistant next month.
Brothers Jose Angel and Alex had been scheduled to make their annual pilgrimage to Missouri as migrant farm workers more than a week ago, Gonzalez said. When they weren't on the road, they divided their time between their mother's house in Texas and their father's Mexico.
Officials have not commented on the events that led up to the disappearances, but the families' informal inquiries produced this version:
On Sunday, Oct. 12, Erica drove her black Jeep Cherokee across the border to El Control. She dropped it at her father's house and went to visit with her boyfriend.
Her mother, Raquel Alvarado, had told her to be back in Progreso by early Monday morning, because Raquel had to work and Erica's kids had to get to school. Raquel put the kids to bed Sunday night and awoke at 4 a.m. to see Erica was not home. She began calling her daughter's cellphone, but got no answer. At that point, it appears Erica was fine.
She continued calling through the morning of Oct. 13. "I'm always worried about her when she goes over there," the mother said.
Around 1 p.m., she reached her former husband. He told her Erica had called her brothers and asked them to bring her Jeep to a roadside restaurant under a bridge near El Control where she was eating with her boyfriend. One brother drove her Jeep and the other drove his Chevrolet Tahoe because they all planned to return to Progreso from there.
According to Raquel Alvarado, witnesses told family members that the brothers arrived around 12:30 p.m. and saw members of the police unit called Hercules pushing their sister and Castaneda and hitting Erica. When the brothers intervened, the police took all four of them, along with their vehicles. The witnesses said the armed men identified themselves as members of the Hercules unit and warned against intervening.
A September news release from the city about Hercules showed an armed force in fatigues and face paint. Mayor Leticia Salazar officially introduced Hercules as a group with particular skills to confront crime in high-risk operations. They have passed background checks and are trained by the state, Quintanilla said.
Neither Salazar nor the city's spokeswoman returned messages seeking comment Thursday.

Sex Abuse Inquiry Head Under Pressure To Quit

A lawyer representing 50 victims of child abuse has said the Home Office must "start again" if it wants its inquiry into historical allegations to win public confidence.
Alison Millar, a partner at Leigh Day solicitors, has told Sky News she will make the argument at a meeting with officials in Westminster later this morning.
It comes after Fiona Woolf, the second chair appointed to lead the investigation, was engulfed in controversy about her social links to Lord and Lady Brittan.
Leon Brittan was Home Secretary in the 1980s and was handed evidence about sex abuse cases, which victims accuse him of failing to act upon.
Ms Millar told Sky News: "It will take quite a lot to convince survivors of abuse that this inquiry is for them rather than a damage limitation exercise by the Home Office."
She said none of her clients had confidence in Mrs Woolf, particularly following revelations on Thursday about how a letter outlining her social interactions with the Brittans was redrafted seven times.
Chair of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee Keith Vaz criticised Mrs Woolf, saying the final version showed a more "detached" relationship with the Brittans than the first one.
For example, it stressed there were a number of other people present at dinner parties.
Mrs Woolf also said the last time she saw Lady Brittan was in April last year, but a picture has since emerged of them speaking at an event last Autumn.
Ms Millar added: "It is not just the personnel, although none of my clients have said that Fiona Woolf has their confidence.
"But it is also the way the whole thing is being conducted.
"Look at how it has been structured - it is not clear how or even, if, survivors of abuse are being invited to participate.
"If they really want this inquiry to engage survivors of abuse they are going to have to start again."
Mr Vaz said said Mrs Woolf's appointment had been "chaotic" and she should decide whether she wishes to remain as chair of the inquiry.

(Zambia Daily Nation)
Zambian Vice-President Guy Scott has become the first white ruler of an African nation in 20 years after the death of President Michael Sata.
Sata died in a London hospital on Tuesday, October 28 and Scott was named interim leader on Wednesday, October 29.
The VP will fill the position until presidential elections can be held 90 days from now in accordance with the country’s constitution.
Defence Minister Edgar Lungu said:
"Dr. Scott will act as president of the Republic of Zambia until the country goes for a presidential by-election."
The interim ruler also confirmed his appointment and announced the beginning of the mourning period for the late president.
He said:
"Elections for the office of president will take place within 90 days. In the interim I am acting president."
"The period of national mourning will start today. We will miss our beloved president and comrade."
Scott, whose parents were from Scotland, will however not be able to occupy the position of president permanently as he is not eligible to contest for the office due to a provision in Zambia’s constitution which bars heads of state with foreign parents.
The last white ruler in Africa was South Africa's F.W. de Klerk who lost to Nelson Mandela in the 1994 election that ended apartheid in the country.

Boko Haram militants have reportedly invaded Mubi in Adamawa State and taken over the headquarters of the 234 battalion.
The insurgents were said to have attacked the town last night causing residents and troops to flee the area.
According to Sahara Reporters, the invasion began on Tuesday night in neighbouring towns before it spread into Mubi around noon on Wednesday, October 29.
The 234 battalion is reportedly one of the largest in the town and soldiers guarding the facility were said to have initially resisted the attack but they were eventually overwhelmed after more Boko Haram members arrived with heavy firepower.
This is the latest in attacks which have brought into question Nigeria’s purported ceasefire with the sect which was announced on October 17.

The Peoples Democratic Party has called for the resignation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal over his defection to the All Progressives Congress.
Tambuwal announced his defection on Tuesday, October 28, during the House plenary.
The PDP has asked the speaker to step down due to the fact that he was elected on its platform and because his new party is a minority in the House.
The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisah Metuh said via a statement:
“The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has met with PDP leaders in the House of Representatives concerning the defection of the Speaker, His Excellency, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to the APC.”
“After a thorough consideration of the matter, the NWC came to a conclusion that the Hon. Speaker, as a responsible elected officer, knows full well what is needful and honourable of him since his new party is in the minority.”
"We are not unmindful of the fact that Hon. Tambuwal became Speaker on the platform of the PDP as the political party with the majority of seats in the House of Representatives and that this incontrovertible fact has not changed.”
Reports have it that Tambuwal delayed his defection due to fears that he would lose his position as speaker of the House.
He is expected to contest the 2015 governorship elections in Sokoto on the platform of the APC.

Pandemonium erupted at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, (MMIA) in Lagos on Wednesday, October 29, when a suspected Ebola patient arrived at the facility.
The patient, a Nigerian identified as Mr. Theophilus Onnakhinon, came into the country from disease-ravaged Sierra Leone aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight.
Onnakhinon was however said to have been successfully treated for the disease and cleared of all infection.
An inside source reportedly stated that the victim had been assisted into the country by Nigeria’s consular officer, Mrs. T. Mohammed to prevent him from facing stigmatization and discrimination.
The source said:
“It is true that there was Ebola scare at the Lagos airport today, (yesterday) but the fact is that the victim had been cured of the disease in Sierra Leone before being assisted into Nigeria by our consular officer in that country and immediately he landed, he was handed over to the port health authorities who immediately carried out checks on him and isolated him from the other passengers.”
“But, the truth is that we just want to recheck what has already been done by the Sierra Leonean authorities. You know, we cannot take chances again in the country. I can assure you that the situation is under control.”
Mr. Onnakhinon was reportedly taken into custody by Port Health officials upon his arrival and is currently being observed to ensure that he is truly free of the disease.
Ebola was imported into Nigeria by Liberian, Patrick Sawyer who arrived Lagos aboard an Asky Airlines flight from Liberia.
The disease claimed 8 lives among the 20 cases recorded before the country was declared Ebola-free on October 20, 2014.

Mission Accomplished? U.S. Marine Corps Might Lower Combat Standards For Women

Getty - Scott Olson
The first three women to successfully complete the Marine’s Combat Endurance Test (CET) have been asked to leave the rigorous, infantry officers training course for failing to meet the physical standards required.
The Christian Science Monitor has details on the three, trailblazing women:
They were physically disqualified from the training last week for falling behind in hikes while carrying loads of upwards of 100 pounds, says Maj. George Flynn, director of the Infantry Officers Course (IOC) at Quantico, Va.
Earlier this month, the women had successfully completed the Combat Endurance Test, the first hurdle Marines must pass to become infantry officers – the quintessential front-line combat job. That accomplishment qualified them for the remainder of infantry officer training, the IOC.
The Monitor points out that it wasn’t just these three women who failed, but three men also dropped out at the same stage.
But, according to an analysis done by the Washington Free Beacon, there are interest groups in D.C. that are trying to get the Marine Corps to change the standards in the training course to help pave the way for women to fill combat roles:
Much of the pressure for integrating women into combat arms comes from DC-based pressure groups like the radical feminist Service Women’s Action Network and from activists like (Ret. Army Col. Ellen) Haring. Grassroots support for such a move is more limited.
Among female Marine officers, including those who support the introduction of women into combat arms, and those who are personally ambitious to try the infantry for themselves, I have never heard anyone assert that they would like standards lowered for them, so that they can pass the course. Why would they? It would entirely undercut the value of their achievement, and diminish the overall fighting capacity of the Marine Corps. These officers are Marines first and individuals second. They want to succeed on fair terms.
Since former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta lifted the ban on women in combat roles, the U.S. military branches have been scrambling to meet a January 2016 deadline that requires them to have incorporated women or come back with a reason – backed by research – why they were unable to accomplish that mission.
According to a report from the Center For Military Readiness titled “Where is the Case for Co-Ed Ground Combat?” the Marines are having a difficult time incorporating women in combat roles, while still keeping the same standards they have vowed to maintain for both sexes.
“Researchers are finding this difficult (actually, impossible) to do, owing to naturally-occurring physical differences that make men significantly stronger,” the report states.  “Androgenic hormones that are not going to change account for greater muscle power and aerobic capacity for endurance.”
It’s clear that integrating men and women in combat roles will bring on a host of challenges, but should the physical standards set forth for the men charged with the difficult and vital job of fighting our nation’s battles in the toughest combat conditions be lowered to accommodate the goal of gender equality?
That seems to be the debate the Marine Corps is faced with right now, as the pressure from the Pentagon intensifies.

WHY I’M DUMPING APC FOR PDP, SAYS — FANI FEMI-KAYODE.

JUNE 3, 2014
BY ‪#‎TUNDE_ODESOLA‬.
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode
A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has dumped the All Progressives Congress for the Peoples Democratic Party, accusing the party of having an Islamic agenda and being intolerant.
Fani-Kayode, who spoke with our correspondent on the phone, on Monday, said that the leadership of the APC was insincere.
A statement by the former minister described the spokesperson for the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, as a liar – for allegedly saying that he (Fani-Kayode) never joined the party.
Mohammed did not pick the calls made to his lines by our correspondent.
The statement by Fani-Kayode read in part, “I have stated these facts and set the record straight – due to the fact that Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the spokesman of the APC, had the effrontery to say in an interview with a magazine earlier today, that I was never a member of the APC and that I never joined them formally. The truth is that Mohammed is not only a liar but he is also a coward.
“I cannot remain in a party where a handful of people that have sympathies for Boko Haram and that have a clear Islamic agenda are playing a leading role.
“This is made all the more untenable when some of those people are working hard silently and behind the scenes to impose a Muslim/Muslim ticket on the party for the Presidential elections next year.
“I cannot be in a party where a few of its leaders are more interested in playing politics with the whole Chibok issue and hurling bricks at our military for not doing a better job. I cannot be in a party in which the role of one of its governors is not clear on the Chibok issue.”

First women earn U.S. Army's Expert Infantryman Badge

2814 29 170 LINKEDIN 9 COMMENTMORE
Two women have earned the U.S. Army's coveted Expert Infantryman Badge — and they're members of the South Korean army.
Staff Sgts. Kim Min Kyoung and Kwon Min Zy are the first women, Korean or American, to earn the special-skills badge created in 1943.
"There were 21 soldiers from the (South Korean army's) 21st Infantry Division that competed with them, pushing and pulling each other, helping each other out," Kwon, 21, said through a translator.
Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army and Republic of Korea soldiers trained and tested for the badge starting Oct. 19 at Camp Casey, South Korea. But only 94 earned the Expert Infantryman Badge on Thursday, said Command Sgt. Maj. Andrew Spano, the senior enlisted soldier for the 2nd Infantry Division.
The badge was created to recognize infantrymen who have demonstrated a mastery of critical infantry tasks, according to the Maneuver Center of Excellence's website. During the five-day testing period, infantrymen are evaluated on 30 tasks and abilities, including physical fitness, land navigation, weapons proficiency and marching.
Testing for the badge is open only to soldiers in the infantry, one of the military occupational specialties closed to women in the U.S. Army. But in South Korea, female soldiers are allowed to serve in the infantry.
The 2nd Infantry Division runs infantryman testing about once a year, usually in the fall, and every eligible American infantryman as well as those in the Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army are invited to participate, Spano said.
This year was the first time the division had soldiers from a Republic of Korea infantry unit test for the award, he said.
In all, 21 noncommissioned officers from the 21st Infantry Division, including three women, tested for the badge, Spano said. Eighteen earned it.
The challenging test typically has an 8% to 10% pass rate, Spano said. During this year's test, the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division achieved an 18% pass rate, he said.
"It's pretty intense, and it's very difficult," he said. "Each candidate is being evaluated against a standard, and that standard is pretty tight, pretty meticulous."
In the past, soldiers in non-infantry units, including U.S. women, have participated in the testing but were not eligible to earn the badge even if they met the standards, Spano said.
"This is a really big deal," he said. "This is history in the making because no other time has a woman ever actually earned and worn the EIB. This is monumental."
And the other soldiers who tested alongside the female soldiers "didn't even blink an eye to it," Spano said.
"It doesn't matter if you're male or female, a standard is a standard," he said. "You have to pass that standard. No one gets any breaks; no one gets any deals."
The two female soldiers were almost dwarfed by their backpacks during the foot march, Spano said.
"But they were out there," he said. "They deserve it because they earned it."
Spano predicts this will be the way of the future, as the Army looks to open combat arms MOSs to female soldiers.
Kim, who has served for three years, and Kwon, who enlisted a year ago, both chose to be in the infantry, said Sgt. Jung Hoi Won, who was translating. Kim described the infantry as one of the toughest military occupational specialties in the army.
"As a female, it takes a lot of strength to train and become an expert," Kim said. "But I had many comrades beside me to help me," Kim said.
In South Korea, all male citizens serve about two years of mandatory service in the military. Women who serve do so voluntarily, and if they enlist, they are sent to school and enter the service as staff sergeants.
Female soldiers were first integrated into the South Korean army in September 1950 during the Korean War, according to information from the 2nd Infantry Division. The women were assigned to separate units, segregated from men.
In 1991, the country abolished its original policy, replacing it with a new one allowing female soldiers to serve in a variety of specialties. By July of this year, a new policy allowed female soldiers to serve in any specialty, according to the 2nd Infantry Division.
Kim and Kwon were selected along with 19 other soldiers from their division to test for the U.S. Expert Infantryman Badge after graduating from a similar test in the South Korean army, Jung said.
Kim also said the honor will help her as she resumes her duties as an infantry squad leader over both men and women.
"It means she can lead with much more expertise," Jung said on Kim's behalf. "Earning the EIB means really becoming a real soldier."
When asked what they thought about the U.S. Army's ongoing study into whether to open combat arms specialties, including infantry, to female soldiers, both Kim and Kwon were supportive.
Kim said she didn't know American women were unable to serve in the infantry until she started testing for the Expert Infantryman Badge, Jung said.
"She thinks that women are as able to do the training as the males," Jung said. "It's a personal (opinion), but she thinks there's no difference for women being able to join the infantry."
More than 500 South Korean and U.S. soldiers started training for the U.S. Army's Expert Infantryman Badge in mid-October, but fewer than 100 made the grade.(Photo: Chin-U Pak, U.S.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Two F-22 fighter jets intercepted six Russian military airplanes that neared the western coast of Alaska, military officials said Friday.
Lt. Col. Michael Jazdyk, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said the U.S. jets intercepted the planes about 55 nautical miles from the Alaskan coast at about 7 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday.
The Russian planes were identified as two IL-78 refueling tankers, two Mig-31 fighter jets and two Bear long-range bombers. They looped south and returned to their base in Russia after the U.S. jets were scrambled.
At about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, two Canadian CF-18 fighter jets intercepted two of the long-range bombers about 40 nautical miles off the Canadian coastline in the Beaufort Sea.
In both cases, the Russian planes entered the Air Defense Identification Zone, which extends about 200 miles from the coastline. They did not enter sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada.
Jazdyk said the fighter jets were scrambled "basically to let those aircraft know that we see them, and in case of a threat, to let them know we are there to protect our sovereign airspace."
In the past five years, jets under NORAD's command have intercepted more than 50 Russian bombers approaching North American airspace.
NORAD is a binational American and Canadian command responsible for air defense in North America.

DOGS AND MUSLIMS A TOXIC MIX

DOGS AND MUSLIMS A TOXIC MIX
A report from Spain this week claims two Islamic groups based in Lérida, a city in the north-eastern region of Catalonia where 29,000 Muslims now make up around 20% of the population, demanded that local officials regulate all dogs in public spaces so as not to “offend Muslims”.
Muslims leaders demanded that dogs be banned from all forms of public transportation including all city buses as well as from all areas frequented by Muslim immigrants.
Muslims said the presence of dogs violates their religious freedoms and their right to live according to Islamic principles.
After the municipality refused to give in to Muslim demands, the city experienced a wave of dog poisonings. Local media reported dozens of canine pets were poisoned in Lérida’s working class neighbourhoods of Cappont and La Bordeta.
These districts are heavily populated by Muslim immigrants and the poisoning of dogs has continued unabated.
This follows dog-related controversies in other European countries.
In Holland, Muslims who live in The Hague and who now make up more than 12% of that city’s population of 500,000, have campaigned to rid the city of all dogs. Muslims view dogs as offensive and unclean.
“A ban on them would be a sure vote-getter”, one Muslim spokesman said.
“The keeping dogs as pets is tantamount to animal abuse”, he claimed, and called for the possession of dogs to be declared a criminal offence.
Well, I reckon dogs are more intelligent, better company and certainly better behaved than most Muslims.

U.S. Fighter Jets Intercept Russian Aircraft

WASHINGTON, Sept 19 (Reuters) - U.S. and Canadian fighter jets intercepted Russian aircraft that were flying near U.S. and Canadian air space this week, a military spokesman said on Friday.

The United States and Russia are increasingly at odds over Ukraine, where Russian-backed separatists have been fighting for control of parts of the former Soviet state.

On Wednesday, six Russian aircraft entered the United States' air defense identification zone (ADIZ), an area beyond sovereign U.S. airspace, according to a statement from NORAD, a U.S. and Canadian aerospace command, and U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM).

In response, "two Alaskan-based F-22 fighter jets acting under the authority of NORAD identified and intercepted two Russian IL-78 refueling tankers, two Russian Mig-31 fighter jets and two Russian Bear long-range bombers in the ADIZ, west of Alaska," the statement said.

On Thursday, Canadian fighter jets intercepted two Russian Bear long-range bombers in the Canadian ADIZ.

The Russian bombers did not enter the United States' or Canada's sovereign airspace.

John Cornelio, a spokesman for NORAD and NORTHCOM, said that such intercepts had happened over 50 times in the last five years as Russian aircraft conducted exercises.

"We do not see these flights as a threat," he said.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko secured over $50 million in U.S. assistance during a visit to Washington this week but did not clinch U.S. weapons his soldiers might use to fight the separatists. Poroshenko also visited Canada this week and received aid in the form of a C$200 million ($182 million)five-year loan. (Reporting by Missy Ryan; Editing by Lisa Shumaker)

SALT LAKE CTIY (AP) — A Utah couple and their three children found dead in their home last month were likely poisoned, their bodies found together in a locked room with cups next to each of them, and empty bottles of methadone and nighttime cold medicine in a trash can.
Police in Springville aren't saying who killed the family or whether one of the parents might have been involved. Toxicology results have not determined an exact cause of death, but search warrants obtained Wednesday say the family was likely poisoned.
Benjamin and Kristi Strack were in bed, with children ages 11 through 14 lying around them, tucked in bedding up to their necks, according to the search warrants. Kristi Strack had a red liquid coming out of her mouth.
Some of the bodies looked to have been positioned after they died Sept. 27. They were found by the couple's older son and Kristi Strack's mother, who said she couldn't believe "she" would do this to the kids but wouldn't elaborate, police wrote.
Investigators found empty methadone bottles, 10 empty boxes of nighttime cold medicine and two boxes of allergy medicine in their garbage, along with a red liquid substance in Pepsi cups. They also found a pitcher of red juice, a purple bucket with yellow liquid, a bag of marijuana and other medications, including sleeping pills.
Springville police Lt. Dave Caron said Wednesday he couldn't comment on the search warrant or speculate about the cause of death until results of a toxicology test come back. That's expected in late November, he said.
"Until I get those, I really don't have anything," he said. "I could come up with all sorts of theories, but it's not helpful."
The search warrant says it wasn't normal for the children to be in their parents' room because they have their own rooms.
Kristi Strack was last seen alive at 6 a.m. by the older son's girlfriend, who also lives in the home. The girlfriend went back to sleep after talking with Kristi Strack, and the house was quiet when the older son and his girlfriend left the house that afternoon.
When they returned at 7 p.m. and saw the house was still quiet even though all the cars were in the driveway, they knocked on the master bedroom door. When no one answered, the couple called Kristi Strack's mother and her friend, who helped them force it open.
Authorities have previously said the five did not die violently.
The five were identified as Benjamin Strack, 37, his wife, Kristi, 36, and three of their children: Benson, 14, Emery, 12, and Zion, 11.
Little is known about the family. A family spokesman has declined to reveal much and, at a vigil, family members declined comment.
Benjamin Strack's former boss said he worked off-and-on for six to seven years at AK Masonry, a bricklaying company, and had borrowed money in the past. Court records show Benjamin and Kristi Strack pleaded guilty to misdemeanor forgery charges in 2008 and disorderly conduct the following year.
Springville is a city of about 30,000 near Provo, about 45 miles south of Salt Lake City.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Anonymous White House criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that drew condemnation in Israel is roiling Washington politics, putting the U.S. administration on the defensive and prompting congressional demands for President Barack Obama to repudiate the remarks.

The Atlantic quoted an unidentified administration official who used profanity to assail Netanyahu and complained about his settlement policies in the West Bank. The official also questioned the prime minister's commitment to Middle East peace efforts as well as his resolve to launch a pre-emptive strike against Iran to thwart its nuclear program.
The incendiary comments come six days before elections with Democrats struggling to hold onto their Senate majority and taking steps to boost voter turnout in typically low-interest midterm contests. The remarks also come against the backdrop of negotiations involving the United States and other Western powers to secure a nuclear agreement with Iran.
The high-profile diplomatic flap, all based on anonymous opinion, underscored the already tense relationship between Obama and Netanyahu despite decades of close ties between the United States and its Mideast ally.
At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest insisted Wednesday that the remarks did not reflect the administration's view and were counterproductive.
"The prime minister and the president have forged an effective partnership, they consult closely and frequently and did so as recently as this month right here at the White House in the Oval Office," Earnest said. "That close relationship does not mean that we paper over our differences. The fact is the United States has repeatedly made clear our view that settlement activity is illegitimate, and only serves to complicate efforts to achieve a two-state solution in the region."
Earnest said there was no effort to determine the identities of the official who made the remark.
National Security Adviser Susan Rice maintained that the U.S.-Israel relationship "is not in crisis." Rice was meeting on Thursday with her Israeli counterpart, Yossi Cohen, and senior delegation of Israeli officials for the US-Israel Consultative Group Meeting — a biannual event.
In Jerusalem, Netanyahu dismissed the comments and insisted he was "not prepared to make concessions that will endanger our state."
"Our supreme interests, with security and the unity of Jerusalem first and foremost, are not among the top concerns of those anonymous elements that are attacking us and me personally," he said.
On Capitol Hill, Republicans and some Democrats pounced on the anonymous comments and criticized the administration.
"When the president discusses Israel and Iran, it is sometimes hard to tell who he thinks is America's friend and who he thinks is America's enemy," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said. "Over the last several months, I have watched the administration insult ally after ally. I am tired of the administration's apology tour. The president sets the tone for his administration. He either condones the profanity and disrespect used by the most senior members of his administration, or he does not. It is time for him to get his house in order and tell the people that can't muster professionalism that it is time to move on."
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said "responsible presidents ensure their advisers work through policy differences with our closest partners respectfully and through the appropriate channels."
Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, called the comments "counterproductive" and "unprofessional."
Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., called them "outrageous" and added: "Personal attacks against leaders of allied countries have no place in our foreign policy."
Said Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., "Comments like these go right to our fears about the administration, which is seen as treating our friends like enemies and our enemies like friends."
