Terrorism: FG moves to review orientation policy

ABUJA—Following the current insurgency in some parts of the country, Federal Government has said it would develop a comprehensive and workable policy on value re-orientation for its citizens to ensure sanity in the society.

It attributed the current challenge of insecurity in the country to the decay in the norms and cultural values system.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Mrs Nkechi Ejele, stated this at the delegate conference on the Formulation of a National Policy on Orientation in Abuja.

She said: “The core values that were cherished by our fore fathers had been jettisoned that is why we are working assiduously with some knowledgeable resource persons to develop a policy that will enable us address the problem.

“There is need for us to have a structure and systematic way addressing the problem, to ensure value re-orientation and behavioural change.”

Also, a Resource Person from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, Jos, Prof. Olu Obafemi, noted that the much talk about ‘our unity in diversity’ as a nation was a mere lip service.

He said “we have subjected to values and culture that are alien to us,” and this had swallowed up “our norms and values.”
