A Benin prince and son of the Oba of Benin, Osama Erediawa,
yesterday, resigned his appointment as an executive director, Governor’s
Office, in Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s administration and joined the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).In a letter he addressed to the Secretary
to the Edo State Government, Prince Osama thanked the state government
for the opportunity he was given to serve the state.
The State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Louis Odion, was not available for comment as at the time of going to press.
However, a source close to the office of the governor, who craved anonymity, described the development as “non-issue as this guy was really never a factor within the government or the Benin palace.”
On what could be the prince’s grouse, the senior official said: “I can tell you his siblings who still occupy high positions in the current administration are thoroughly embarrassed by his action. I am sure our highly referred Oba will also be unhappy with this.
“He is not the only one the Comrade Governor gave political appointment as a mark of goodwill to the palace, you have Princess Theresa Eradiauwa, who is executive director of MDGs Bureau, you have Princess Ekiuwa Inneh, who the governor made the Head of Service in 2012 and on retirement last year, he made her the Head of the Civil Service Commission. Princess Uze is a senior executive in the Economic Team Office. Prince Ekpen is the immediate past chairman of Oredo Council. I can tell you these individuals are scandalised by Osama’s action.”
Meanwhile, controversy yesterday trailed the impeachment of the suspended Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Festus Ebea, as a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker, Abdul-Rasak Momoh, who allegedly signed the impeachment notice along with 15 other lawmakers, alleged that his signature was forged.
But the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) described the argument on the impeachment of Ebea as needless, saying with four members of the Assembly on suspension, only 13 lawmakers, which met two-thirds constitutional requirement, were needed to impeach him.
Recall that Momoh’s name was contained in a list of 16 lawmakers in the 24-member Assembly, who allegedly signed the impeachment notice based on which Ebea was impeached.
But at a press conference in Benin yesterday, Momoh denied signing any impeachment notice on the deputy speaker, pointing out that his signature could only have been forged.
