96,000 Graduates To Be Mobilised In 2014 Batch B Orientation – NYSC DG

The director general of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi has disclosed that over 96,000 graduates will be mobilised in the 2014 Batch B Orientation which will commence on 26th August, 2014.
Olawumi, who was speaking during a media chat with bureau chiefs and editors, also stated that security challenges in the country have continued to put pressure on the deployment and relocation process of the scheme, adding that the scheme will not force corps members to serve in the troubled states but will rather relocate them automatically when they apply for it.
He added that the requirement for relocation or redeployment is on health or marital grounds, and warned corps members that procure fake medical papers for the purpose of effecting relocation to desist from the act as medical papers submitted for that purpose will be subjected to scrutiny and any case of forgery will be punished in line with the NYSC Bye-Laws.
The DG said that in order to increase the relevance and impact of the scheme and expand its value to critical stakeholders, he has come up with a four-point agenda including improving the service content of the scheme, enhancing the welfare and safety of corps members and staff, expanding partnership for greater impact, funding and support and increasing the visibility and relevance of the scheme.
He added that the scheme which was established 41 years ago, has succeeded in mobilising over 2.7 Nigerians and pledged the scheme’s commitment to redoubling its effort at implementing policies meant to allow corps members render selfless services to the nation in a secure environment.
Olawumi revealed that the scheme is into collaboration with the office of the senior assistant to the president on millennium development goals in furtherance of the community development service effort, according to him, the programme focuses on achieving the millennium development goals for the country through sensitization, advocacy activities carried out by corps members.
He noted that the programme would enable corps members to create public awareness on government policies, programme such as MDG’s vision 20 -20 -20   as well as transformation agenda by functioning as development knowledge facilitators to all the 774 local government of the federation in order to reach out to 2,500,000 students and pupils.
