Military sacks Boko Haram from Damboa forest

The military has reclaimed Damboa town, south of Borno which was initially taken over by Boko Haram mid-July, a military source said.
Hundreds of Boko Haram fighters overran Damboa, about 89 kilometres from Maiduguri on July 18 in an attack described as “daring” by military authority, leading to the dead of no fewer than eight security operatives including an officer and five policemen.
However, a military officer yesterday, in Maiduguri, confirmed to Daily Sun that the military has regained Damboa town. “It wasn’t  as if we lost Damboa to Boko Haram as reported in the media, but a kind of operational setback. The attack on our base actually affected our operations there but we’ve taken control of the general area now,” the officer said on condition of anonymity.
But in neighbouring Yobe State, residents said the insurgents have moved into the area to take over some military camps especially at Buni Yadi, Buni Gari and Goniri in Gujba Local Government Area.
They said the destruction of bridges that link the area, 55 kilometres south of Yobe State, have given the insurgents free access to communities in the area as troops found it difficult to get to the area, claiming “Boko Haram now move freely with their arms in the area.”
it was gathered that residents of the area now break their journeys at destroyed Katarko bridge to cross over and join waiting vehicles to Buni Yadi or Buni Gari.
One of the residents, Adamu Saleh, who rode on a bicycle to Damaturu, said Boko Haram insurgents moved into the area with their guns and other weapons. “I am just coming from Buni Yadi. I came with my bicycle all the way to this place. I did not use any bush path. I followed the main road. We are facing a very terrible situation. There is no single security in our area. The same in Buni Gari and Goniri. In fact, the boys have taken over the military camps in the area,” he told a group of journalists.
