Sacked Ebonyi Speaker reinstated

The purported impeachment of the Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Chukwuma Nwanzunku has been nullified and reversed by the State Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The House, on July 21, with 18 of its 24 members, announced the impeachment of Nwazunku and elected Mrs. Helen Nwobashi as the new speaker, a move that divided the House into two camps with two speakers.
But the early intervention of Governor Martin Elechi, the founding fathers of the state and PDP saved the situation as they declared that there was no impeachment and that Nwazunku remained in office.
Elechi, while briefing journalists after the meeting with the Assembly members and PDP executive members, said the alleged impeachment was not good enough.
According to him: “We considered all this and in the interest of justice,  peace and fair play, we as a government, as PDP believes, state and affirm that Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku was never impeached as was alleged. He still remains the speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly and we shall continue to work with him as such. Other grievances among the lawmakers, we shall assist to resolve. But let me say that we are also ready for any person or group should there be any eventuality.
“It is exactly three weeks when we woke up to hear the impeachment of the Speaker of House of Assembly, Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku. Ever since then, there have been reactions from all manner of people. From the informed, uninformed and ill-informed. We have read on the pages of newspapers various comments and reactions.
“We as a party, we as a government remained calm and did everything to unravel the issues that led to the alleged impeachment of the Speaker. We interviewed both sides. They bared their minds and spoke frankly. On our part, we believed that the issues that led to the alleged impeachment were not good enough to justify any attempt of impeachment.
“We are also convinced that the impeachment was in all respect improper and unacceptable. We also realised our responsibility and obligation to ensure maximum peace in Ebonyi State. Not, of course denying the rights of the honorable members to change their leadership as and when they deem it necessary, but in a democracy you allow all options to prevail because everybody has right to say what he thinks and what he believes in.”
he stated.
