He stated this in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday during a courtesy visit on Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in the Government House. The former Head of State, who is officially declaring his intention to contest the presidential position in 2015, in Abuja today, was in Government House to seek the support of the governor and the people of Rivers State.
According to him, “APC is in a hurry, in a decent way, to improve democracy in Nigeria and to secure and manage it efficiently.” He, however, called for the understanding and cooperation from all Nigerians, adding that every Nigerian is important.
“We have a problem. The problem is fundamental, there is the question of securing and efficiently managing the nation, which is absolutely necessary,” he said.
The presidential aspirant explained that APC was concerned about the personal and job security of Nigerians, saying, “I assure you that we will do our best.
“Every Nigerian is important to us, every Nigerian is very important to us and we are concerned about his personal security and his job security and I assure you that we will do our best,” he said.
He explained that APC, under his leadership would create job opportunities for Nigerian youths. He said he was overwhelmed by the large crowed, comprising youths, men and women that turned out to welcome him and his entourage.
He criticized what he called, the self-centredness and the individualistic nature of Nigerian leaders , noting that whoever finds himself in a position of authority, especially where there is money, puts the treasury in his pocket.
He said PDP had messed up itself and Nigerians, adding next year is another opportunity to put things right. Buhari, who described multi-party system as the best form of government, said what happened in Ekiti and Osun States was an eye opener and urged APC to mobilize and win the election or be prepared to go under. He reminded the people that their permanent voters card remains the vehicle for the desired change.
Buhari, who commended Governor Amaechi for the infrastructural development in the state since he became governor in 2007, said he was, however, worried about the relationship between Rivers government and the federal government.
“I have been quite close to Rivers State, I have been really disturbed, very much so, by the relationship between the Rivers government and the centre. I admire the courage of the governor, the way he takes it, and the way he maintained the control and support of his people, is not easy under the environment of PDP, but I must sincerely congratulate Amaechi. He has carved a place in history for himself, up to the end of time. Whatever Amaechi did in infrastructure will be there. People will read it.”
In his response, Governor Amaechi commended the former Head of State for traveling to various states, to canvass for support instead of talking to the governors only .He said the struggle was not about them, but about Nigerians.
According to him, Nigerians are tired of learning democracy every year. “Anytime you talk to somebody, that there is too much corruption, there is failure in governance , he would say, ’we are leaning democracy’ . Anybody who is a child at 20…and because they are saying, ‘we are learning democracy, and we are still children’, that is why we have produced APC. You won’t know the metaphor of APC, until you remember when we were very young. Whenever we had headache in the past, APC found solution to our headache. So, the metaphor of APC is a metaphor of healing.” Amaechi described Buhari as detribalized Nigerian and someone who is not a religious fundamentalist, as he was labeled by his opponents.
“One thing I like about you is, anybody you talk to, your enemies, your friends, all agree that you are not corrupt. I have never met a Nigerian, who told me that you are corrupt. I have never! There are so many things they can tell me about you, but nobody has told me, ‘no, no, General is corrupt’ ”
On the entourage of the former Head of state were, the Chief Audu Ogbeh, Alhaji Aminu Masri, Senator George Akume, among others.
