Enugu Guber: PDP Denies Plot to Disqualify Ugwuanyi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu state Thursday dismissed as false and mischievous media reports to the effect that its consensus candidate for the 2015 governorship election, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi "may not be cleared" by the party's national leadership for his alleged “role in the emergence of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.
Ugwuanyi was said to have joined forces with some members of the lower chamber of the National Assembly to ensure Tambuwal's emergence in violation of the party's decision that the position be zoned to the South West.
But in a statement signed by the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Enugu state, Dr Okey Eze, the party accused those who lost out to Ugwuanyi as being behind the blackmail in the media in order to mislead the public and discredit the party’s choice.
"Ordinarily, the State Chapter of the Party would have wished to ignore the antics of these unfaithful party members, knowing full well their political antecedents since the dark days of the past PDP administration, and their penchant for blackmail and mischief, usually when they are not favoured in a contest, but since their inordinate acts are capable of miss-informing the public, and biasing the minds of undiscerning members of our Party, the need to react has become imperative.
"We wish to state clearly that the said media publications do not in any form reflect the true position of the National Leadership of our Party. Rather the publications are the handiwork of mischief makers who because of their unpopularity in the Party lost out in the democratic process that led to the emergence of our Party’s consensus candidate.
"It is common knowledge that the National Leadership of our Party has always encouraged the emergence of popular candidates as the surest and easiest way for the Party to win elections.
"The Party in its wisdom has since the emergence of the Alhaji Dr. Adamu Mu’azu- led National Leadership established a new order of reform programmes through national rebirth and reconciliation, political integration and an enduring electoral process that would guarantee free and fair primaries of the party and as well give every member of the Party an equal opportunity to vote or be voted for in all elections.
"It is therefore mischievous to allege in the national dailies that the Party leadership under the watch of the National Chairman would align itself to such an act of victimization over an unfounded allegation being anchored by bad losers in our Party in Enugu State," the party noted.
It further noted that Ugwuanyi’s credibility in the National Assembly and his contributions as one of the stabilizing members of the Party in the House of Representatives are overwhelming as has been testified by many members of the House including the House Leader, Hon. Mulikat Akande.
The party further dismissed as spurious insinuations describing the lawmaker as an anointed candidate of the Governor of Enugu State, explaining that he was unanimously adopted by all the caucuses of the Party in the State through a democratic process.
It therefore reaffirmed that the emergence of Ugwuanyi would not stop other interested aspirants from taking part in the party's primary election as a level playing ground would be made available to all party members wishing to contest the primaries.
