Gallant strides of Imo Police Command

Wednesday August 20, 2014, will not only be an unforgetful date in the lives of residents of Area “M” Zone “E” World Bank housing Estate, new Owerri, Owerri, Imo State, but to all residents of Owerri metropolis and indeed, the state in general. It was a day, officers and men of Nigeria Police Force, Imo Command, did what many in the State considered impossible. It was a date the police surprised the people of the state with their gallantry and wonderful call to duty. It was a date men of the Nigeria Police Force laid than their lives for the sake of sanity and responsibility in the state. The date will remain indelible in the hearts of the people of the State because it was a day many thought the members of the underworld would have a field day, but the police gave a  quick and brave response.
The Police, on the said date, moved in an unusual manner, to protect the defenseless and vulnerable.
That very day, the Police in Imo State received a call at about midnight that armed robbers were operating at Area “M” Zone “E”, World Bank Housing Estate, new Owerri. Operatives of the Command’s counter terrorist unit in conjunction with the Command’s “Scorpion Squad” responded to the operation. On arrival, the criminals, on  sighting the policemen, engaged them in a gun battle. During the shoot-out, four of the robbers fell to the superior fire power of the Police. While one was arrested alive, others escaped. However, two policemen sustained bullet wounds and have since regained their health.
While briefing newsmen in Owerri, the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a deputy Superintendent of Police, stated that three double barrels, one single barrel locally made shotgun, 25 lives cartridges and one expended cartridge, cash of N16,990.00, one Techno mobile phone, one wrist watch, four wallets and one vehicle ignition key were recovered from the hoodlums.
This rare feat achieved by the gallant men of the Nigeria Police Force has given new respect to the police by the members of the public, especially in Imo State. It has discarded the impression by some people that the police have shied aware from their responsibility of protecting lives and property. It has restored the confidence of the people in the police. This feat  has put to an end the insinuation that  policemen are only out to take bribes and extort moiney from unsuspecting members of the public. It has shown that the Nigeria Police, with the correct leadership, commitment, training and encouragement, can compete with their counterparts across the globe.
I have always, maintained that the Nigeria Police Force is capable of combating crimes in the country. In my investigation into the problems and challenges confronting members of Nigeria Police Force, following my experience as a crime reporter, I have discovered that most police officers do not have patriotic reasons for enrolling into the force. They do not have love and passion for policing and, as such, no penchant for fighting crime.  Honestly speaking, those who detest injustice and social maladies excel in the Nigeria Police Force.
The above gallant effort was not the first time in the State under the brave leadership of the commissioner of police, CP Abdulmajid Ali. The Commissioner of Police who arrived in the State in February has achieved tremendous successes…
Within the period under review (from March to August), over 40 vehicles were recovered from car snatchers, and about 20  kidnap victims rescued and re-united to their families. While 36 kidnap suspects have been arrested, property worth N29 Million were recovered from criminals, C.P Ali confirmed.
These tremendous and laudable achievements were recorded through various anti-crime fighting units and outfits the commissioner of police set up. CP Ali constituted a strong crime fighting unit, known and called “SCORPION SQUAD”.
This squad is instrumental to the success song the leadership of Imo police command is singing today. The “SCORPION SQUAD” had the daunting task of beginning CP Ali’s war against criminals in the state on a positive note. That the squad did not relent in its mandate as it trasversed the state in search of miscreants and other crime doers. “Scorpion unit” smashed and crushed crime and kidnap syndicates. It was a total war against crime.eaking new grounds in order to achieve greater successes, the Imo CP yet again set up the ‘MONITORING UNIT’ to complement the efforts of the police command. The MONITORING UNIT is directly under the office of the commissioner of police, with the CP himself as the lord head of the unit. The unit has the mandate of monitoring all the activities of the officers of the police and report directly to the commissioner of police. What has made the monitoring unit a huge success is the kind of officer; CP Ali handed over to take charge Barr. Linus Nwaiwu was mandated to lead the unit in order to record unprecedented success. Barr. Nwaiwu, a superintendent of police is a dogged crime fighter and expert in crime investigation. The monitoring unit is one of the success stories of the Imo CP..
Ali also set up the“SURVEILLANCE SQUAD”. This has its network and tentacles spread across every village in the state. The squad was mandated to clamp down on criminals especially in the hinterlands which the CP opined has become worrisome in the state. In no distant time the squad was inaugurated, it began to record amazing break-throughs.  Petty criminals, like motor cycles, phone snatchers, child traffickers were all apprehended. The most out-standing discovery here was, how the surveillance squad was able to rescue unhurt a one year old child from child traffickers and re-united him with his parents. In the wake of these squads working committedly to have a a better Imo, more challenging situations came up, which the commissioner of police dealt with drastically. At a time in Owerri metropolis, the menace of cultism became the other of the day. each other. Ali rose to the occasion and set up” OPERATION RAINBOW” which has helped to restore   normalcy to the state capital. With the menace of bomb scare in Imo, CP Ali also responded by setting up “OPERATION TSUNAMI.  This squad was made up of experts in defusal of explosive metals. One of the biggest achievements of the “OPERATION TSUNAMI” was the defusal of explosive metals which were planted by unknown people in a popular church in Owerri, Winners Chapel. With the menace that comes with the ember months, CP Ali has over one month ago set up “SPECIAL RESPONSE SQAUD” to contain with the hazards of ember months. The squad is stationed in special points across the state capital. One month after, no negative news which normally comes with the ember months has been had in the state. The media department of the CP, led by the PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, has been tremendous and alive to its duties.Kudos to Imo Police Command
