Lagos confirms 3 jailed for attempted bombing

The controversy over whether Boko Haram ever made an attempt in Lagos was last night laid to rest, as the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, revealed that three members of the group have been jailed for planning to bomb the state.
A blast had rocked Creek Road in Apapa, Lagos, on June 23, 2014, killing three people but security agents said it was an explosion and not a bomb.
Speaking at a press briefing yesterday, Ipaye stated that the Federal High Court in Lagos presided over by Justice Ibrahim Buba sentenced three members of the sect to 25 years imprisonment each. He revealed that trial was in secret, as requested by the prosecution.
Stating that 17 suspects were initially charged to court, but 13 were released, the commissioner said the suspects were charged before Justice Buba with conspiracy to commit terrorism, illegal possession of firearms and being members of a proscribed organisation.
According to him, another accused person was discharged and acquitted on the basis that there was insufficient evidence linking him to the plan. He said the Department of State Security had carried out a coordinated raid of suspected terrorists around Lekki and Ijora areas of Lagos in March 2013.
He stated: “Following the submission of investigation report by the Department, the Attorney General of Lagos State obtained a fiat of the Attorney General of the Federation to prosecute the suspects at the Federal High Court under the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013 and other relevant statutes.”
